Reaching up to the wall, I rap my knuckle four times. Like clockwork, she knocks three. Four knocks for four letters in love. Three knocks for three letters in you. It’s something we’ve done ever since we shared a wall. It’s a gentle reminder that even though I’m angry, irritated, or even sad, at least I have Lia, my best friend, the one person who can so easily put a smile on my face. I don’t know what I’d do without her.
“Hey,” Breaker whispers as he slips his arm around me. When I don’t look at him right away, he tugs on me and forces me to meet his eyes. “Your glasses are fucking awesome,” he says quietly, his mouth close to my ear. “Besides your heart, your honesty, and your sauciness, your glasses are one of my favorite things about you.”
“Not only are they a direct depiction of your personality, but they make the beautiful, light green flecks in your eyes stand out even more. It’s already sometimes impossible to look away from them, but when they’re highlighted so exquisitely, you can’t help but be captivated.”
Lia: You don’t love me! Breaker: Shut up. You know I love you more than anything.
I go back to the dressing room, knock, and then enter, only to find Lia standing in the middle of the room, wearing an off-the-shoulder cream lace dress that accentuates her waist and gently flows to the ground. Holy. Fucking. Shit. My mouth goes dry as my eyes slowly work their way up her torso, to her neckline, and then to her face and . . . something hits me. Something so strong, so foreign that I don’t know how to categorize it. Like this overwhelming sense of . . . breathlessness.
For a moment, my heart actually stopped beating, and the world stopped spinning, and everything was on pause as she came into view.
She stands on her toes and presses the lightest of kisses to my cheek. Even though it means nothing other than friendship to Lia, to me, it feels like she just branded me and marked me as hers for eternity.
I want her so fucking bad that it’s painful. When I gaze into her eyes, I don’t see anything other than admiration. It’s a fucking look from her I will always cherish, I will live for, because it shows me just how much she trusts me.
Lia is the most precious person in my life. She’s my ride or die. She means everything to me. She’s my girl.
“What do you want?” she asks. You. Everything about you. Your soul. Your mind. Your heart. Your body. I want all of you, every last fucking inch of you.
When I wake up, I wonder how I can possibly interact with you, how I can catch a glimpse of your smile. Throughout the day, I know that if I need a pick-me-up, some comfort, or fun, you’re the person I want to see. And at night, when I go to sleep, you’re the last thing I think of before I shut my eyes.
“I think about you every second of every day, Lia. I want you more than I’ve ever wanted anything in my life.”
“Because you’re so special to me.” His thumb caresses my cheek. “I’d move mountains for you, Lia.”
“You deserve so much too,” I say to Breaker, who just shakes his head. “I have all I need, Lia,” he answers, looking me in the eyes.
You’ve brought vivid color into my life, Lia. You’re the one pumping the oxygen through my veins.”
I’m so fucking in love with you, Ophelia, that I can feel it all the way to the marrow of my bones. It’s a part of me. You’re a part of me.”
