It was at this time that I found out how much I loved cooking. I adored the process of baking something (well, truthfully, it was probably a Duncan Hines mix!), I loved the smell in the house, but most of all, I loved taking care of Jeffrey and making him happy. This was the very first time I thought of food as an expression of love. Before I started cooking for Jeffrey, food could be good, bad, or mediocre like the food at home, but it didn’t matter because it was just sustenance, not pleasure.
I love when changing your behavior—in this case, how I dressed—changes everything without your saying a word. It’s a lesson that I’ve used many times in my life.
