“It’s easier for women to believe in magic because we have the ability to make life and carry it inside us. We’re already magic. And it is a magic no man will ever understand.”
“I generally think I’m better than most people, yes.”
“I would hate to kiss you and ruin you for any other man’s kisses.”
“I don’t normally kiss women like you. Untouched. Innocent. You never know what their fathers might insist on.”
“Part your lips for me,” he said.
He was no longer in control or instructing me, no longer amused by me or the things I was saying. No, he unraveled against me, bit by bit. His breathing was ragged; his heart thundered in his chest. He shuddered against me.
“Surrender. I want to make you mine.”
“As do I. And I give you my word that you will never know pleasure like you would with me.”
Sometimes you have to brush away the parts of your life that no longer serve you so that you can move forward.”
“You can’t stop thinking about me,”
“Lia, what is it you want?
I want to touch you. To see you,
“May I?” he asked. I was struck by a giddy urge to laugh uncontrollably. He could do whatever he wanted to me and I would thank him for it. But I saw that he wanted my assent. “Yes.”
When you kiss me, it will be because you choose to, not because I tricked you into it.
“If the very drunk men in this room see how beautiful you are, you will receive a great deal of unwanted attention. While I know we can fight our way clear, tonight we should try to allow everyone to keep their blood inside their bodies, where it belongs. And the best way for that to happen is for you to wait for me in the back. Can you do that?”
I tried to stop myself from following his every movement, but it wasn’t working. Everything he did was utterly fascinating. The way his mouth formed words, how his muscles flexed in the firelight, the sheer delight in his laughter.
“Is it my fault that you’re so fascinating that I have to understand everything about you?”
“That had nothing to do with you. Those men owed me money.” “All of them?” I asked incredulously. “Yes. It was fortunate for me that they all gathered themselves together in one spot like that so that I could demand payment. And if they were there for you, well, it hardly seems sporting to lie in wait like that.”
“Why did you say that you liked that I was always hungry?” His voice was low, sensual. “Because a woman who has an appetite for one thing often has a healthy appetite for others.”
“Like the physicality that exists between us. How you can’t get your fill of my kisses,” he said in that same hypnotic tone that made me lose all feeling in my legs. “That’s not true,” I weakly protested. “It is. I could spend hours kissing you and you would demand more.”
me. Or I was just being so obstinate and headstrong that he’d let me do something reckless just so that I could learn my lesson the hard way. And he understood me well enough to know that it was the only choice he could have made.
“I like how ordinary things seem special through your eyes.”
Unless you want to become a eunuch, I suggest you move back.” “That would be your loss,”
“You want me to kiss you.” It was a statement, not a question. A smile hovered just above his lips. “That’s very bold of you. You didn’t even ask my permission.” “I didn’t think I needed to.” “You don’t.”
He made me feel like a ravenous beast. And he was every bit as hungry and desperate as I was.
“Why does kissing you always feel like swordplay?” I asked against his mouth, sighing the words. “And we haven’t even involved my sword yet.” He
As if he instinctively understood every single way to make me respond, to make me melt, to turn me mindless with need for him. Only him.
“I am jealous of him, you know,” he said. “Why?” “He gets to be with you as often as he would like. He can fly in and see you and touch you and be near you and I would give anything to have that.”
“I pledge to you my whole heart. My entire soul. Every part of my being already belongs to you. Ask for anything and it is yours.”
You would break my heart, shatter my soul, if I allowed myself to return the feelings you claim to have.”
“I pledge you my sword, my body, my blood. I will protect you and keep you safe.”
“You would lay down your life for me?” “Without hesitation.”
know the things that make you smile, what makes you angry, what I can do to coax those soft, excited noises out of you that I so adore.”
That’s what seeing him again was like—as if I’d been holding my breath for days and could only now breathe again.
Desperately. Completely. Totally.
“I saw no other woman tonight but you.”
His answer was his mouth hot on mine, moving and sliding, pressing and pulling. He
“Why did you do that?” I demanded, my lips urging me to kiss him again. “It’s the best way I know to keep you quiet.”
“Are we sparring again?” He almost purred the words. “Is it my turn to lunge?”
“Yes. And you always turn me away. It is the most frustrating thing I’ve ever experienced.”
“Maybe it’s good for you to be denied.”
“It is not good for me. Do you know that I wake up every night with your name on my lips, sweating, gasping, reaching for you, wanting you so badly that even my teeth ache?”
“Why can’t I stay away from you?” “I asked you first.”
“In your dreams, what do I do?”
“Would you like me to do that to you now?”
do I touch you that you like best?”
“Tell me what you want,”
“Have you been sent to tempt me? To make me forget myself?” He shook his head, smiling wryly. “I ask myself the same thing. It’s like we’re two flames, drawn to each other, meant to burn brightly together.” “That also means we can destroy one another.” “Yes, but it would not be a bad way to die,” he said.
