“Stop trying to speak in Fey,” one of the women whispers in English. Her eyes are strangely bright, an otherworldly violet. “I understand English. Your Fey pronunciation is painful.”
“You look like you hate everyone around you,” he adds. “Oh, that’s because I do.”
“Mom!” My throat aches when I scream, and no one is coming to help. “Dad!” Children need looking after.
But everything changed after the kiss. The kiss told me who he really was under that beautiful, golden-tongued exterior. Warm arms pull me in close against a steely chest, and I gasp for breath.
“There are now eight remaining, which is better than ten.” Ten minus two equals eight. My first grade teacher, Mrs. Mermenstein, would be proud of us all.
“Oh, you’re the life of the party, Tana, for sure.” She blinks. “I am?” “No, pet. That was sarcasm. We could be in the middle of the wildest piss-up in the world, draped with gorgeous men and drinking and dancing, and your eyes would go glassy, and you’d tell us some poor sod was murdered on the very spot we’re standing a century back. Oh, and also, that we’re all going to die in a week.”
