I turned to find his eyes trained on Danny as he strode away. Yes, I was aware of exactly how nice his ass looked in those dark wash jeans that were worn and torn in all the right places. And yes, that shirt showed off his defined biceps. That didn’t mean I was putting up with all the fucking ogling, ghost or no. I narrowed my eyes. “Would you like to see if it’s scientifically possible to die twice?”
Realizing the room had gone silent at something he’d said—yet again—Danny looked up. “What?” “I think we're at our quota for fucking ghost whisperers is what,” Kevin said, eyes still a little wide. “Well, rest assured I’m still registering zero on the paranormal scale. When Rain talks to them, he gets this little furrow in his brow. Right here,” he said pointing at his own forehead. “Like he finds them horribly annoying but he’s trying to be patient.” “You kind of look that way right now,” Nick ventured. “A smart man would draw a conclusion from that,” Danny said mildly.
I headed to the bedroom and grabbed a pair of shorts and a wrinkled t-shirt from my “going to put the laundry away any day now” chair and changed.
“If you just follow the connections I drew, you’ll see an undeniable pattern.” “Follow the connections…. Good Lord, Christiansen, there are lines everywhere,” he fussed. “It looks like you fell asleep with a fistful of uncapped markers in both hands.”
“I can only assume that those fancy little Ds you’ve written underneath their pictures mean they’re dead.” “It’s a sophisticated system,”
I knew he’d heard the rumors just like everyone else. Stick around BBPD for more than an hour, and someone was bound to tell you some gossip about the resident ghost whisperer. I swear, the station was held together by duct tape and rumors.
“I need you to talk to me. What’re you so afraid of?” “I’m not afraid of anything,” I said automatically. “I mean, other than spiders, bugs, snakes, heights, geese—” “Geese?” “They’re mean, and don’t bother to try and tell me that they aren’t.” I gave him an arch look. “One of them chased me in a parking lot.”
I loved my family to bits and pieces, but I was pretty sure I’d never felt safety—the absolute certainty that someone had me no matter what—until I met Danny. He was my person. As simple as that.
