Lily has never questioned why my age has remained so consistent,
we all have a mutual agreeance to not acknowledge where I came from before my parents decided to take guardianship.
"When you remove a man's tongue, you are not afraid of the defamation he might bring to your name, rather than the truths he might speak. Truth brings clarity, and clarity breeds defiance," Xavier says with pain.
"And you speak like there is good in me. Perhaps we were both mistaken."
Turning on my heels, I meet the face of the one person I have dreamed of since that gun collided with my face.
"Where are we?"
"How else would we get our Dove to fly?"
Immortality. Is that what Xavier is chasing?
"You will never have to hide from me, Forest Blackburn."
"If I was Marked, I could tell myself I forced you to say that, and you had no control over the blanket of shame you wear.”
The man is evil incarnate, but even the devil has his weaknesses. If I can figure out what hurt him that day, then I might have a chance to end his reign for good.
Letting me live was his biggest mistake.
One conversation and your mind is his. He may look like a man, but I promise you, what lies within him is nothing short of evil," I warn.
"Your name was Elenoor,"
"As is mine. One day, your words might be both of our salvation, even when it may feel like you are only steering our hope farther away from us."
I am the reason he is here. I'm the reason he found her.
"Until my last breath."
"Fear is for the dead."
Continuing in my sprint, I ignore the fears festering in my stomach and force myself closer to the society that has only grown more divided.
"Anything is better than my current reality."
"She wanted to be free. Now she is."
Xavier might have come here for retribution, but revenge has already claimed Forest's soul. And now, it comes for him.
"Consider it my Pandora's box. If the individual who cursed me lets what I have to say out, all hell would break loose,”
“Last I saw of you, Adam had a knife in you, and I was forced to my knees. I could do nothing but give you what energy I had to escape. If I wanted to speak to you one-on-one, I would have.”
There are no words to express the fear that consumed me at the feeling of my upturned grin beneath my own touch.
"One bond," I whisper, placing my hand over his strong heart. "One soul," He continues, running his thumb over my cheek.
"They got him, Forest. He's here."
Forest was never there to begin with. The reality is, I don't know if I am talking about just the photo or Forest's childhood entirely. What the hell is going on with my mind?
I’m sorry WHAT?!
You were pregnant in the prologue! Or were you?
Was your kid taken and replaced with Forest and they reprogrammed your chips so you didn’t know?
Is she really your kid? Is she really Andrew’s kid?
My brain hurts.
Focusing all my energy on finding one source of weakness, the vivid image of a woman and girl cling to me. The girl is young, possibly Forest's age. Her hair is black, her eyes dark, as dark as the ash floating through the air.
Why can't I shake the feeling he genuinely wanted me to listen to him?
He is my devil, and I am his reckoning.
Let's hope I'm not wrong about keeping you alive. Find them. Send them to us. I'm counting on you to trust the good you saw in me. -Xavier
"I can't hug my dad. I never thought I would miss it, please-"
"Dove." My heart stops. "Her name was Dove."
“Forest, I am physically incapable of lying to you. Of course I didn't know. Do you think me telling you why I began calling you that was all bullshit? I have no fucking idea why you'd assume I knew her, so let me make it fucking clear,"
As long as their lives are at risk, peace will never find me.
"This can never happen again," I gasp, repeatedly trying to wipe his blood clean from my face.
Glancing up at me, his mouth curls into a sinister grin. "A drink of your choice," He mutters, repeating the words he had thrown at me in the Lottery. "What the hell did you do?" I yell, backing away in a panic. “What the hell did you do, Forest? That's where your humanity lands you.”
Why crawl out of hell if the devil is already here?
