In 1789 the French population switched almost overnight from believing in the myth of the divine right of kings to believing in the myth of the sovereignty of the people.
I would say there’s a difference between the idea that is enforced by might and fear and the idea that is enforced by cooperation and mutual benefit.
I’m sure the French didn’t suddenly decide that they didn’t want to live under their monarchy anymore. They just decided it was time they could do something about it.
