In Lisbon in 1631, when a silver box with the host in it went missing from a church, fingers pointed quite arbitrarily to ‘a young youth of our nation (hence a converso) whose name was Simao Pires Solis’ who, passing not far from there to visit a lady, was apprehended, imprisoned and terribly tortured. They cut off his hands and after they had dragged him along the streets burnt him, one year passed over and a thief at the foot of the gallows confessed how he himself had rifled and plundered the shrine of the host and not that poor innocent whom they had burnt.
