But Lennox has something I’ve never encountered before. She’s genuine. Full of raw honesty and good intentions. It fuels me in the best way. The moment I was ready to give up on people, Lennox gave me hope. She excavated a side of me I was trying to bury.
“I’ll tell you whatever it takes to keep you from walking away from me. I don’t know how to explain what you mean to me.” “Try.” I wiggle my hand free of his and place it on my hip.
“Trouble…my heart stops every time you walk into a room. I am fucking obsessed with you. I have been from the very first moment you showed up at my bedroom door and gave me that ten-dollar bill.” He reaches out to cup my cheek, running his thumb along my bottom lip. “But how do we make sense? My destiny is everything you despise. I didn’t know how else to keep you close except with…lies.”
Grandma steps towards me and places her palms on either side of my cheeks. Her cool hands are trembling. “Choose love over fair. Over duties. Escape, Dex. Do you understand me? Love, love, love. Fight for it. Obsess over it. It’s the only thing that makes sense at the end of your life. How do I get you to understand that? You should have loyalty to absolutely nothing else except love.”
“Lennox, it’s been so much longer than two weeks. I think I missed you before I even knew you. If I hadn’t met you, I’m convinced I would’ve ended up alone. You have no idea the hold you have on me. I needed us to start as friends, otherwise, I would’ve called your power over me straight-up sorcery.”
I push out all logic and reason and trust my gut. I trust the man who holds my heart and has since the very first day I met him. My best friend. My partner. He smiles at me, and I know with my whole heart it’s the only smile in the world that could convince me to swim with motherfucking sharks.
