“Well, now I feel bad for not taking you guys out somewhere nice.” “Out?” I scoff like the notion is ridiculous. “Then I would’ve had to put on underwear. Staying in is perfect.” Dex levels a stare at me, his expression flattening, and I feel the heat in my cheeks. “You’re not wearing—” “Just a bad joke, Dex. Sorry.”

“Can I tell you something?” He locks eyes with me. “Sometimes with Leah…it’s really hard to read her because she so easily misses all the signs. I don’t want to come on too strong. But I’m into her…really fucking into her. So much so, it’s driving me insane.” It feels like salt in the wound but I smile and nod like it’s good news. I step out of his way, and he squeezes my shoulder as he passes. “Why not tell her how you feel?” He spins around and sucks in his lips as he looks at me. Once again, he’s taking his time to calculate his response. I hate how he does that. It makes me feel like our

“Did Jacob implement any of this?” “No, he never got the chance. And anyway, it wasn’t a real plan, just a way to get me into a good college.” Dottie’s eyes snap to mine, and she surveys my face. “But this business plan is very good. You wrote this when you were eighteen?” I nod. “Just about.” “Do you know how many pitches and business plans come across my desk? All from professionals who never once think to include ethical business practices, checks and balance systems, and giving back to the community in their five-year plans. You wrote this based on how the business could better society

Daisies, daisies, daisies, They follow me into the ocean. They haunt my sweetest dreams. My heart is detached from my body, lying in a field of white flowers. A long, full life is a curse. Every single breath that staves off death keeps me away from you. Pink lips. Rosy cheeks. I let you go in this life. But you’re mine in the next. I promise.
“She liked you, I promise. I have no idea what that was. She’s been having breakdowns left and right lately. I think she might be sick. I’m starting to really worry about her,” Dex says. I turn to face him. “She’s not sick, Dex. Don’t you see it? Your grandmother and Jacob were obviously lovers.” “What?” He looks torn between disgusted and offended. “She married my grandpa at twenty. Are you suggesting she had an affair?” “No. I’m saying you don’t have to be with someone to love them.” “Len, I’m not saying my grandma had the perfect marriage, but she loved my grandpa a lot. She loved my mother

finally at peace. The gnawing ache of longing soothed. “Dex Hessler, we were never friends. We were just waiting.” “Waiting for what?” he asks. “I have no idea. Something big.”

“No one’s ever touched me like you do. I come at the mere thought of you. Stop being jealous, Dex. I’ve been yours since the very moment we met. And now that we’ve established that, you can have what’s yours, however you want.”
“How do you want me?” he murmurs as he switches to my other breast. “Greedy, Mr. Hessler. Angry. Hard. I want to meet your dark side this morning.” His sexy smile disappears instantly, lustful need filling every inch of his expression. “I’m done with the jealousy, Lennox. If I ever find out you’re thinking about another man, I won’t end us. I’ll end him. Don’t ever make me miss you again. Do you understand?” I nod. “Use your words if you want to come this morning,” he growls. “Yes.” “Sir.” With obnoxious exaggeration, I look around the room. “Is someone joining us? Who the hell are you

“Oh shit, baby. Your ass is already bright pink. I took that too far.” He hunches over me, his stomach pressed against my back. “I’ll stop.” I turn my head, looking over my shoulder. When I find his cheek, I plant a firm kiss. “Don’t you dare. Just a little harder. And don’t let me come until the end. We’ll both come once.” His cheek twitches against my lips. I can’t see his expression in this position, but I can feel his smile. “Why? If I could come multiple times in a row, I would. If you’ve got the superpower, use it.” I chuckle. “The teasing makes me feverish, Dex. I’m telling you what I

“So fucking sexy,” he murmurs. “Are you getting wet for me, baby? Or are you still wet for me? Hm? I thought I wore you out last night, but you can’t get enough, can you?” The clank of his belt unbuckling makes my stomach lurch. I freeze, now alert and tense. Oh no. How dark is his dark side? There’s a whoosh as he yanks his belt free of the belt loops. “Wait, wait. Dex, please wait. I’ve never been belted. Not too hard.” “Are you fucking crazy?” He sounds so aghast, I can’t help but peer over my shoulder to check his reaction. Dex looks exactly like he sounds, as if I just admitted that

“It feels a little weird?” I watch the worry lines form on her forehead. “Yes.” “Forget how this happened, Lennox. Let’s just be glad it did. It doesn’t feel weird to me.” She smiles. “How does it feel for you?” I search my mind for the best answer. All I want is to put her mind at ease. “It feels like my favorite memory. Like I returned to a home I didn’t even know I had.” She puckers her bottom lip. “You are so good at that. The way you speak to me…” “It’s all the PR and public speaking training. I was born to be in corporate or politics.”

“Roll your eyes at me again,” I say, dropping my voice to a husky whisper. “I’ll bend you over this counter and spank you.” She chuckles as she clamps her knees tightly around my waist. “Go ahead and do your worst, Mr. Hessler.”
“Lennox,” she finally says. “You’re too kind.” “Thank you.” I show her a sheepish smile of modesty, but her expression grows grim, and she slowly shakes her head back and forth. “No, sweetheart, you’re too kind. They are going to chew you up and spit you out in Miami.” My heart thuds heavily at her bizarre warning, but I don’t have time to ask for clarity.
“You guys like Dex,” I mutter. “Don’t forget that.” Dad grumbles something inaudible under his breath. “Okay, asked and answered… Do you wish I married Alan instead?” I place the plastic bag between my feet and recline to match Dad’s angle. He reaches across the center console and pats my knee. “Did you love Alan?” My heavy heart aches like it always does when this comes up. The guilt hasn’t absolved, but the truth is getting easier to tell with each day. “Not in the way he deserved.” Dad’s eyes are forward, the flickering lights hanging on either side of the garage illuminating his face. It’s

“Watch me all you want. I have nothing to hide. I’m just surprised you didn’t call.” “I’m sorry.” He’s quiet for so long, I know I made him feel bad. “I was in back-to-back meetings and I just…” “Oh, hey, I’m messing with you. I’m not trying to be clingy.” “Please be clingy,” Dex says simply. “Lets me know you’re thinking of me, which is nice because I’m always thinking of you. Len…I’m sorry. I promised I’d be there and I’m not there. Clearly, I’m under the Hessler curse.” “It’s fine,” I assure him. But it’s not lost on me that we’re already starting this marriage with broken promises. “You’re looking down on me either extremely pleased or wildly horrified, aren’t you?” I ask out loud. “I hope that you’re happy Dex chose me. I promise you, Dottie, I’ll take good care of him. I love him.” I wave my hand around the office, gesturing to the luxury finishings. “Not for any of this, but I fell for him because…” Actually, I don’t know how to finish my sentence. I want to say it’s because Dex is kind and sweet to me. But so was Alan. No, with Dex, it just feels like fate. Like I had no say in the matter. We met, and then my entire romantic life became a game of resisting fate and

“You think I’m an asshole?” “No,” she whispers. “You tricked me, Dex Hessler. You got me to fall for you well before I knew the stakes.” “I’m sorry, baby… About not preparing you. But making you fall for me was the smartest thing I ever did.”

“Thank you,” I murmur against her skin. “For what?” “After business trips, I usually return to a house. This time, I’m returning to a home.” “You’re returning home to a hot mess express of a wife who just humiliated you in the media. I gossiped like a schoolgirl about my boy toy to a fucking rat of a human being.” “Embarrassed me?” I ask, smirking into her neck. “I didn’t actually read the article. What else is in there about me and my dick?” “Nothing. Just that you’re well-groomed and have long, thick fingers and know how to use them,” she mumbles hurriedly. I burst out laughing. “None of

Dex makes a beeline to the cupboard behind the desk. He retrieves a crystal decanter of amber liquid and two matching glasses. Looking over his shoulder, he raises an eyebrow. “No protests? This is brandy.” “After today, I think I’ll try a stiff drink.” He sighs heavily as he fills both glasses, one more full than the other. After joining me on the small sofa, he hands me the smaller one. “Take a little swig and let it sit on your tongue for a moment. Once you swallow, immediately exhale.” I follow his instructions, taking a generous sip. As I breathe out, the bitter burn of the liquid seems

Fire everyone who is uncomfortable with me as the CEO? Hell, Dex. I’m uncomfortable with me as the CEO. What if your team quits on you?” Dex shrugs. “Let them quit. Or I’ll fire them one by one until I have a team who respects where my priorities lie.” Glancing up at his hazel eyes, I ask, “Being?” “Everything else in my

Lennox must get sleepy because she feels a little heavier as her body relaxes on top of mine. “Hmmm, I’m so tired,” she mumbles, “don’t let me drown in here.” “Never.” I kiss the top of her head. “How do you feel?” “Probably sore tomorrow,” she says with a weak laugh. “But tonight, I’m perfect. How was that for you?” “Addicting,” I admit. “I love you, Lennox. So much.” She lets out a sweet, low hum. “Thank you… I’m still saving mine. Moment’s not quite right.” I chuckle softly. “Okay, then. “Are you unhappy? Be honest.” I place my hand on his cheek. “I’m so happy when you’re here. But, when you’re gone, I’m…” “Not,” he finishes for me. “And I’m gone more often than not.” “Exactly,” I admit.

“Len, I don’t want to trap you in a life you hate. I don’t want us to have a marriage like my grandparents or their parents before them, where we lead separate lives and grow to secretly resent each other. Is that where we’re headed?” “I don’t know,” I answer honestly. “But you know what I do know?” “What’s that?” I smile at him. “I love you, Dex. With my whole heart. Always have, always will.” He kisses my forehead. “Perfect timing. I needed to hear that right now. I love you too.”
“Wait, Dex, there’s something I need to tell you about Denny,” I say, clamping my legs shut, squeezing the life out of his hand. There’s a smirk on his face. Like he’s thrilled I just denied him. “Did you just close your legs on me?” I nod slowly, once again glancing at the box on the table. “I hate to pile on, but there’s something else you need to know… I don’t know how to say it.” “Are you leaving me?” “No,” I assure him with wide, horrified eyes. “Is it medical? Are you hurt? Is someone else hurt?” Puzzled, I answer, “No.” “Then I don’t care right now. We can talk later.” “Dex…you can’t

“That’s what this is? Payback for messing up?” I ask breathlessly. It dawns on me that Dex might actually be working out his aggression on my rear. He leans over me from behind, one hand wrapping around my throat. He doesn’t squeeze hard, just a little pressure as he whispers into my ear, “You messed up. But you’re my wife, and you have my loyalty in all things. So, when I punish you, it’s not because I’m angry. It’s because you love it.”

Dear Dottie, I can imagine what’s going through your mind at the moment. If you’re angry with me for reading your letters, I’m sorry. Perhaps you think I’m angry with you for the contents. I assure you, I’m not. Actually, I’m thinking of how little I know you after four decades of marriage. How much you like to write, your favorite flower, your worries and fears in the office. I suppose I never took the time to get to know you all these years together, which is why none of your beautiful, heartbreaking love letters are to me. I know the man I am. I am a product of my parents and their parents

“With everything that happened…it got me thinking. Maybe it’s time for Hessler Group to go public. We can take on investors and hire a board who actually gets to make decisions. The burden wouldn’t be all mine anymore. We could walk away and have a normal life if you want. Move back into the Las Vegas house, be neighbors with Finn and Avery. See your parents every weekend. What do you think?” What do I think? It’s my dream come true. But I can’t help but wonder if that’s what’s best for Dex. “Going public means pretty much giving up your company, right? If you have a real board in power, they

“Señor Hessler,” he says when he’s wrapped up his conversation. “Great news. We got a report from a few divers just coming up. There are at least two sharks down there.” Shark. My stomach flips as the dread washes over me. Dex’s eyes widen and he shakes his head fervently at the boat captain. He unsubtly nods his head toward me. “Some of us are a little skittish around big marine life.” “Well, this was an almost fun dive trip,” I say, flashing Dex a disingenuous smile. “What’s going to happen to this place?” I grunt as Dex tugs me to my feet. “I have no idea.” He collects my sandals and slips them back on my feet one by one. Dex rises and then scours my face as I flutter my eyelashes at him. “Oh, no,” he murmurs as if he can read my mind. I nod. “Oh, yeah.” “Baby…no. The renovations would be worth more than the property itself. We can find a much nicer place closer to the office.” When we first moved back to Las Vegas, I insisted we keep Dex’s old home.
