He was at my side in one long stride, his hand in mine, his lips at my hairline. “I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.”
“Connor.” Pen hummed, then added, “Connor Mathias King.” My head snapped over, my eyes searching hers. She nodded. “Your father was a great man, Jamie, and he raised an amazing son. It would be my honor to have our son named after him.”
I leaned over and pressed a kiss to Pen’s lips. “I love you, even if you only said it from hormones, I don’t care.” Her hands came up, gripping my face. “I meant it, Jamie. I meant every word.” I kissed her again, and then rested my forehead against hers. “You’re everything to me. You and Connor, we’re a family now.”
“You deserve happiness, Jamie. In any and every way you can get it.”
“I lied to you, Jameson.” My brows caved in as I tried to work out what she was talking about. A tear slipped down her face. “That day you came with flowers and the letter…I told you I would give them to her…” More tears slid down the side of her face. “I thought I was doing her a favor…I thought if she could just move on from you, be free from the eternal crush she had on you, you’d both finally be free. I never gave her the flowers or the note. She never knew that you were an option, Jameson and in hiding that, I ruined my daughter’s life.”
“Your grandpa Mathias is watching down on you, and your grandma Wanda. You’ll feel their love in the warm breeze when it shifts and brushes against your face. They’ll love you in the way the sun will warm you, and the way the snow will fall when you least expect it. You’re not alone, baby boy. You’re so loved.”
I was no longer alone. No longer unwanted, and perhaps I never had been. Maybe Jamie was there in the shadows wanting me all this time, just waiting for me.
Hope was a fickle thing, so I tried to tamp it down and not let it rise within me.
“My future…I want to stay in Rose Ridge. I want this house, I want you, and I want Connor. That’s it. That’s all I want, Pen.”
“He’s dead, Penelope.” My heart seemed to free fall. “He’s what?” Luke was an asshole. He’d hurt me more than anyone else had ever hurt me, but he was still a big part of my past. He was Connor’s father…he was a piece of shit, but he didn’t deserve to die. Jameson kept his face down while he started washing the dishes. “Silas wouldn’t—” I moved from the chair, rounding the counter and angrily turned the water off. “Who gave the order?” My tone was low, barely contained. Jameson leveled me with a firm, confident stare, no regret in those brown irises at all when he said, “Me.”
While you may not like this, Penelope, you are my wife now. Mine. I will not tolerate another man in your life, not when he’s hurt you, and certainly not after he’s had you in every way that I now own you.”
“For years I had to live without you. For years I was just existing in the background. This is me, Pen…the King of Chaos. You’re tied to me now and all this hatred that taints my soul is yours. Fuck, you caused most of it.”
“Yes, I can. You’re my wife, Penelope. You will get the best of whatever I think is fit for you to have. What don’t you understand about being mine?”
“Maybe having you has changed me, Wife. Maybe realizing what it would be like to be your husband and to have you trust me with Connor, has changed me,”
“I hate you for it, Jamie.” He smiled against my lips, before standing up straight and pulling his fingers free from my center, then licking every single one. “Tastes like you love me for it, Mrs. King.”
“Fuck, King. You gonna live?” I smiled at him, there was blood in my teeth, but I spit it out on the floor and grabbed a fresh clip from inside my vest. “Think so, Wes. But we’re going to die here today.” Wes paled, his eyes flicking toward the kitchen. I knew he was thinking of his own family. The same thoughts I had but probably deeper. From what I understood, his connection to Callie went all the way back to when they were just little kids. “What were you going to name your kid, Wes?” His stare lowered to the floor as more shooting echoed around us. “What is it you really want, Tuck? You want revenge, then let’s go outside. You want the club?” He slid the cut off his shoulders and tossed it at Tuck’s feet. “It’s yours, but I will not part with my wife or my son. Not in this life or the next. They are mine. If you need blood, then spill mine. Let them go free.”
“I love you. I’ve always loved you. You’ll go with me wherever I go, I promise.”
“It was always you, Jameson. It always will be you forever. I only chose Luke because I had to move on from you. But you’re in here for always.”
“Who is that?” I whispered to Jamie. Wes suddenly limped into view, then froze at the sight of the man. “That...” Jamie’s face twisted in confusion, looking up. “Is Simon Stone…who is supposed to be dead.”
“What do we do, Silas?” I rasped as terror gripped my heart. The Death Raider slowly got to his feet, swiping at his eyes and then leveled us all with a solemn glare. “Pray.”
“You’re mine, Jameson King. Always and forever, you’re mine and I’m yours.”
