For if we are truly participants in His death (Rom. 6[3ff]), by its power our old person is crucified and the heap of sin which dwells in us is put to death so that the corruption of our first nature may no longer be strong. If we are participants in His resurrection, by that we are resurrected into newness of life which corresponds to God's righteousness.
