Now because the beginning of our conversion to God is for us a hatred and horror of sin, for that reason the apostle says that the sadness which is according to God is the cause of repentance; he calls it "sadness according to God" (2 Cor. 7[10]) when we not only fear being punished but hate and curse sin because we understand that it displeases God.
