Every memory, however trivial he may think it, represents to him something memorable. It is memorable because of its bearing on life as he pictures it; it says to him, “This is what you must expect”, or "This is what you must avoid”, or "Such is life! " Again we must stress that the experience itself is not so important as the fact that just this experience persists in memory and is used to crystallize the meaning given to life.  Every memory is a memento.
