As I continue to chew happily, I don’t realize that Hayes is still staring at me. I blink my eyes open and immediately put the burger down, wiping my mouth with my napkin. “Sorry.” A lopsided smile pushes his cheeks back. “Don’t be. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you this happy before.” I don’t remember the last time I was this happy, but it’s not because of the burger. It’s because of Hayes. His kindness, his attentiveness, his understanding. He’s made me happier this past week than Wilder ever made me in two years.
