didn’t think he’d actually go out and do something crazy. Because this is definitely next-level insane. He probably had this purchase set up in advance because there is no world he went through all of that just to get me to hang out with him. Right? Right?
You don’t acquire new companies often enough to keep me busy.
His eyes dance over the crowd until they meet mine, and he lifts one brow at me in question.
“It’s an honor, Mr. Everette.” “The honor’s all mine,” Damon’s grandfather says with a warm smile. “You look lovely this evening.” “You are way nicer than I thought you’d be.”
“Oh? And how did you think I would be?” Freaking shit. I twitch uncomfortably, but he just stands there calmly, waiting for my answer.
“You, my dear, are different though. You are part of our family, aren’t you?”
“Yes, of course.” He looks at Damon, who’s now staring at us.
“I work for him. I don’t want our relationship to sway people’s opinions of me. It’s already hard enough to be a woman in sports.”
“That’s interesting.” “What is?” He glances up at someone before looking back at me. “That you haven’t realized that everything Damon does is intentional. I assure you, Mrs. Everette, it is not because it was convenient.”
“I’m sorry to cut this short, but there’s a man I need to speak with. Please, stay here until my grandson comes and finds you.”
“Hello, sister.” Sebastian Everette
“Be quiet,” I warn, eyes darting around to see if anyone heard him. “I work for your brother. Remember?” “Ah, yes. You’re his employee only. Our mistake. I guess we’ll need to bring you into the family another way.”
“You know you don’t belong here.” My attention snaps back to her. “I’m working.”
“So I’ve been told, but it appears you have somehow deluded yourself regarding Damon’s affection.”
“W...

“I understand you’re likely sleeping with my son, but don’t misunderstand, he will not stay with you. He will not love you. You’re just an amusement as he passes his time. Just because you’ve been allowed to chase at his feet doesn’t mean you belong here. Do you understand, Miss Hart?”
“Apologize.”
“I hope it’s temporary.” “You would hope that,”
“You will treat her with respect.”
“Yes, of course. I won’t say a word.”
“What did you just say?” “Well, you obviously want to keep her a secret, dear. I didn’t realize you were this desperate to fulfill your grandfather’s request. I’m sure you have your reasons.”
“I imagine if you only want someone to fulfill the required timeline, she’s a perfect choice.”
let go of her and move slowly toward the woman who dared hurt her. “You will regret that.”
“Let it go, Damon. You know she’s right.” “Fuck that.” I switch our grip so that my fingers are entwined in hers and pull her toward the stage.
“What do you think you’re doing? That’s enough. Let me go.”
“I want to thank you all for coming tonight. I appreciate your attention. Let me present to you Misty Everette, my wife.”
“I. Am. Going. To. Kill you.” She’s so fucking perfect. “Fuck, I love it when you’re all stabby. Feel free to try.”
“You would think that. It’s not going to affect you!” “You’re an Everette now. No one will dare say anything about you.”
“You don’t have to worry about that.” “No, you don’t have to worry about that. Hell, I’m going to have to move to Europe to get away from the fallout.”
“Back off.” She looks up at me with narrowed green eyes, a dare written over them I can’t resist. I crash my mouth into hers and lick at the seams until she opens for me with a moan. A dam breaks inside her, and her anger burns her from the inside as she scratches her nails along my back. She pours her frustration into me, and I drink in every last drop. “Fuck,” I groan, pushing my hips into her, staggering my feet on the stairs for balance, and kiss her jaw when her head falls back to rest on the wall. “You are so fucking sexy right now,”
She bucks against me, and I reach down, lifting her by her thighs until she wraps her legs around my waist. Misty buries her fingers into my hair and hauls my mouth to hers, biting my lip hard enough for the taste of iron to fill my mouth. A low groan rumbles in my throat, and she rocks herself against my throbbing cock.
“It’s not a good idea to run from me, Little Nymph.” “Leave me alone.” Her muffled yell comes clear through the door. “You’re in our room,”
“Sleep on the couch, or better yet, go to your own home.”
“Am I supposed to sleep in my suit?”
“Are these tears from me?” She shakes her head no.
“Then why?” “Your mother’s right.” She looks devastated, and I want to tear the world to pieces to fix it. “About what?” I ask, swiping away another tear. “That I don’t belong with you? That I’ll just ruin everything.”
“You’re not an idiot. Don’t ac...

“I don’t give a single fuck what anyone else thinks. What do you think?”
“I want to be here.” “Good girl.” I sit back, forcing myself to give her some semblance of distance. Her brows pull together as she watches me present her with a small, black velvet box.
“Open it.” As if snapping out of a daze, she lifts the lid on its hinges, and her mouth falls open at the sight of the ten-carat canary diamond in the center. “I can’t take this.” “It’s cute that you think you have a choice.”
“Don’t take this off.” I lie flat on the bed and pull her side against me, marveling at the sight of my ring circling her finger. There’s no mistaking she’s mine. “That sounds impractical.” “I’m not joking.”
She yawns, and her eyes droop, so I kiss her softly for several heartbeats. “Sleep, beautiful.”
Misty murmurs and turns her face into me, sighing. I kiss her temple. “Don’t lock the door again, wife, or I’ll have to fuck some sense into you.”
“Do you enjoy disobeying me?” He raises a perfectly arched brow. I bite my lip to hide my smile, because yeah…I do. “I’m technically wearing it.”
“Tell me, wife. Since you’re obviously not bothered by me”—his
what made you look so scared?” “Nothing.”
“Does that mean we won’t go to the gala?” “I wouldn’t miss a chance to show you off to the world. I’ll be back in plenty of time.”
“Don’t look so pleased to be rid of me, Nymph.”
