My book review: this was a beautiful, moving, and engaging book. I was hesitant at first, but pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. In this quote, “you” is AI. It follows four different lives that intertwine and connect on a small Polynesian island facing a life changing dilemma: should the islands inhabitants allow a major American tech company come and build floating cities? The question is pondered throughout the novel as it jumps in timelines and narratives, where you learn different perspectives and explore themes such as the impact of the rise of AI, conservation and environmental consciousness, and colonialism. The best part: we get many dreamlike, palpable illustrations of the ocean and its animals through the lens of an oceanographer. This book was full of challenging questions, whimsy, and intricate personal relationships that keep you wanting to know more. There were a few times where I felt descriptions went on too long and I would zone out - hence it not being an all time favorite. But all in all I highly recommend!
