But by the time they said their vows in the Paektusan Secret Camp, the war in Korea had spread to engulf the entire world. The Nazis and the Italian fascists were battling in Europe. In Asia, Mao’s revolutionaries were marching against both the nationalist Chinese and the Japanese forces. Russia and the United States were in the mix as well. It was truly a world at war—and this is the world into which I was born.
