(Please note that the escape of Gabriel Nox alongside Lance Orion and Gwendalina Vega from the custody of Lionel Acrux and his queen Lavinia Umbra while they maintained residence at the Palace of Souls is to be struck from historical records upon the victory King Lionel expects to claim in the ongoing war).
“Azriel,” I said, my voice an empty, dark thing. He came to stand before me, that crease between his eyes only deepening. “You’re not yourself.” “And who am I?” I bit out, anger sharpening my words to blades, my voice ringing around the expansive hall of the throne room.
“It has arrived. I am the terrible thing. I am the plague which ravages the land. My soul is dipped in blood and there is no knowing what I will do next. But without my efforts, our enemies would have seized Solaria long ago.” Those final words were the only thing that kept me sane. That I was doing the right thing. That if I didn’t act mercilessly against my adversaries, then Solaria would fall to the hands of a worse power than me.
Pride can often be the cruellest emotion of them all. To change the path of a prideful soul is the most difficult of challenges. But take heart in the light, for all who walk the darkest path will be rewarded with the brightest salvation in the end.
Gabriel. Such a big name for such a little boy. A name for a hero, a warrior, a name I already knew he would grow into and own with such pride and ferocity that all would know it. He would stalk through the halls of the castle here, casting fear into the hearts of his enemies with a single knowing look, while others swooned at the mere thought of catching his atten-
The weight of the stars thickened in my throat until I found my tongue bending around words that seemed to spill directly from them. “On the darkest day and longest night, I’ll guide you home with love so bright,” I whispered. I should have been afraid. I knew that. But I wasn’t. For some strange, impossible reason, I wasn’t.
“Say my name when you come,” I commanded. “Say it in that entitled tone you keep using every time you speak it. And when you’re done, I want you to call me your king and renounce all loyalty to your emperor.” I looked up at her as I waited for her to agree, my mouth wet with her arousal as her heels dug harder into my back in a demand for more.
“My queen.” I bowed my head, hearing her inhale just a little like the stars hadn’t been sure of what my answer might be to that. “There will be no one else.” “Have me,” she said, and I needed no more encouragement than that.
That very same day I’d taken my position as Aer Captain, Caleb had fought with the Medusa girl who ruled Terra House. Apparently she’d fallen to her knees and sucked him off right there and then, though maybe that was just my imagination running riot. I mean, that seemed like the natural thing to do after you got beat by a powerful leviathan like Cal. Or me.
I knew Darius had been friends with him for years, but the dude had issues, and since he’d shot a peach into my mouth during sex ed the other day and nearly choked me to death on it for talking too loudly about my sexual experiences, I couldn’t say I was much of a fan of him.
He was left in shadow, silhouetted by the blaze at his back and for a second, he had a look of his father about him, his eyes narrowed and the slant of his mouth twisted by cruelty. A whimper left my throat and I leaned into Caleb, not liking the feel of Lionel Acrux here in our sacred space.
