He would love with a passion rivalled by none and felt by all, he would fall hard and fast, painfully and inescapably into a love so great that it would rock the foundations of the world we knew and beyond.
“Our son will change the world, he’ll be the greatest Seer of his generation,”
“For a time,” he agreed. “But he will know all the best kinds of love in the end. Even if he never knows ours.”
“On the darkest day and longest night, I’ll guide you home with love so bright,” I whispered.
Caleb needed to feed just like I needed to touch. We were polar opposites, but here we were, each balancing one end of a scale like the Libra constellation embodied. That made a lot of sense to me seeing as my rising sign was Libra.
every time I spent too long without the warmth of another Fae close, I remembered the Forging my parents had put me through when I was a cub, leaving me on a mountain alone to defend myself for a full week. So now, whenever I was away from my brothers too long, I remembered that chill, I could feel it frosting my bones, fear swelling in me, begging me to find them once more, to reassure myself my kin were near.
“I’m always good when you’re close, Cal,” I said,
“Don’t ever disappear on me.” “I won’t,” Cal swore,
“Well, I bet I can help with that,” he said, shifting towards me and making me lick my lips as my attention fixed on a throbbing vein which tracked through the V at the base of his abs right before the water lapped around his waist to conceal it. He stopped before me, his eyes running down my body and making me smile as he didn’t bother to hide his appreciation. “Damn, are you sure you aren’t at least a little bit gay, Cal?” he teased. “Because you look real good all wet and thirsty.”
Melinda’s family was a closed cavern, but still, I had my eye on her brother for a point of leverage – the man’s mind was addled to the point of insanity and I was having quite the jolly old time murmuring nonsense rumours in his presence, then watching him create scandal after scandal to keep his sister occupied and her eyes off of me.
I was doing this for her on some level. Being a better man, making the better choice. But why? Because of some inane delusion I had about claiming her? My mind was always ripe with thoughts about her, forbidden thoughts that I knew I could never act on. Not again, anyway. Not unless she wanted it too.
“You're not drinking?” she breathed. “No.” I inched closer, resting my hands on the couch either side of her. You free my mind more than any drink ever has.
She was all my favourite summer delights, sunshine, strawberries and ecstasy.
Fuck the world. You deserve to have some fun.” “Since when do I deserve to have some fun?” I balked. “I’ve been a royal asshole for a solid year. No, two years. And I can’t say I’m really planning on giving up the trend.” “Yeah well, you’re good to your inner circle,” he said with a laugh.
I had to wonder if Cal had known he was setting me up on a date with the moon all along. He always did go above and beyond for me. And I was gonna make sure I had more than a few stories to bring home just for him. Deep down, I knew why I liked this place so much. Even more than because I was a Werewolf and I worshipped her every night. It was because Cal had been the one to buy the moon for me. And somehow, I would find a way to buy him the whole world in return.
The tension between us since the night Venus and the moon had played together in the sky hadn’t dissipated even a little. If anything, I’d say it was growing with every passing day we didn’t acknowledge it. So obviously I was going to continue pretending there was no issue.
“Aw, did you wait for me, Cally baby?” I taunted, stepping after him and bashing my shoulder against his. I moved down the stairs, breaking into a jog to catch the others. Caleb shot to my side, keeping pace with me with ease and his gaze flickered dangerously. “Just making sure you didn’t lose your footing on the stairs. I know how clumsy you can be.” His foot whipped out, tripping me, and I went flying forward with a snarl,
The entire academy had come to witness the immense power of the savage twins and honestly, I felt proud to be their friend in that moment. Remorseful over how difficult we had made it for them to reach this point, yet not entirely regretful. Because we had been the fire in their forge.
“I pledge my life to your service,” he spoke low but the words carried across the masses, everyone falling quiet once more. “Cal,” I whispered. “It’s not real.” “It is,” he growled, like he needed it to be, but I couldn’t face it if it wasn’t. “It’s him,” Max said, moving in on my other side, and I turned to my Siren friend, seeing the truth blazing in his eyes. “It’s time,” Caleb said,
They had proven their power time and again, but tonight, they had gone beyond all bounds of any Fae in this world, and we were left with no choice. For their magic outshone mine, and their hearts were gilded in starlight. I was no match for them, never had been, but I could be their warrior, a Wolf who would wield the shadows of the moon for them.
I lowered to my knees beside Caleb, feeling like I was slotting into my rightful place in this world at long last. A home I had ached for at the sides of my friends, all four of us united once again. We had moved through this life as one, like our souls made up a river that flowed together in one direction, and it ended here, in this sea of kismet.
I had no doubt now, that this had always been our destiny, to kneel before them and lay our lives in service to the Phoenix queens.
