“Tell me to stop,” he whispers, tilting his head as he leans in until his lips are hovering over mine.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted my own happily ever after,
“Whoever it is, and whatever happens, just know that life has a way of working itself out. What’s meant to be, will be.”
“I’ll never want you,” she snaps. “Not in a million years.” I cup the back of her neck, my thumb brushing over her pulse point. “Then I’ll wait a million years and a day, Kitten. I’ll wait forever if I need to, so long as you understand that you’re mine as much as I’m yours.”
My heart twists painfully as I look into the mirror. I was supposed to get my own happily ever after, just like in the romance novels I love so much.
He’s a perfect match for you, and deep down, you know it too. You’re just too scared to admit it, to put your heart on the line.”
“Don’t resent her for not reciprocating your feelings, or for not responding the way you might want. She’s a romantic, but she’s slow to trust, and she might not let you in easily. If you can win her over, she’ll love you for the rest of your lives. She doesn’t love easily, but she loves deeply.”
Promise me that even if she shatters your heart into pieces, all those broken shards will still belong to her, and you’ll give her a chance to put them back together.”
“I’m going to enjoy finding ways to make you all flustered. I didn’t think you could get more beautiful than the way you look when you glare at me, your gorgeous eyes sparkling and your cheeks all flushed… but this? Yeah, this’ll become my new favorite pastime.”
I cup her face, noting the way she’s trembling. “Be careful what you ask for, Kitten. There isn’t much I won’t do for you.”
“I’m well aware that you don’t need my money, but I still want you to have access to it. Perhaps it sounds strange to you, but I always imagined my wife buying whatever she wants with my card.”
she murmurs against my mouth, before tightening her grip on my tie and pulling me closer, until my lips are on hers. I moan when she kisses me,
Stop letting your fears dictate your thoughts and actions.”
“Waiting for you to stop running,” he answers, his expression unreadable. “I told you, didn’t I? I’ll wait a million years and a day, if that’s what it takes.”
I want him to show me the parts of himself he keeps hidden. I don’t want his patience. I want to be the one he loses his cool over.
I don’t want to look for things that aren’t there and drive myself crazy by reading too much into things,
“You’re cute when you’re jealous,” she tells me, and I pull back to throw her a glare, my hands moving to her thighs. “Baby, you don’t want to see what happens when I truly get jealous.”
I want your raw, unfiltered truth, your insecurities, your jealousy. I want every single thing you dislike about yourself, every single thing you try to hide. I want all of you — all the little things that make you who you are, not who you pretend to be.
He gently places his index finger underneath my chin and forces me to face him. “Don’t do that,” he says, his tone pleading. “Don’t dismiss your needs simply because I failed to meet them.”
It reminded me that it’s possible to build almost anything, if you’re patient enough — even something as elusive as a better future.”
“Then eventually, this girl came along that challenged me at every step, and I fell in love even more, harder than ever before. I became obsessed with competing with her, and she inadvertently helped me grow my company into more than what I ever thought possible. She became my lifeline. This incredibly beautiful, batshit crazy girl became the highlight of my entire damn life. She gave me purpose, and she doesn’t even know it.”
“I tick most of those boxes, but not the last one. You see, my husband gave me a credit card that supposedly doesn’t have a limit, and I have every intention of checking if it’s true.” “Hmm, I do love the sound of that. Go spoil yourself, Kitten. I’ll be at home, waiting for you. In bed. Naked.”
“Spend the night here, both of you. I don’t think I have many nights left, Sierra. I’d like to spend one more under the same roof with you both, just to put my own heart at ease. Let me sit with you for a few hours tonight, and let me make you two breakfast tomorrow. I’d like to see with my own two eyes that you’re happy, that you’ll be okay without me.”
I can’t help but feel like he’s only doing this because I left, and I can’t go back to someone that doesn’t appreciate what he’s got until it’s gone.
After all, ‘Happily Ever After’ isn’t a moment. It’s a choice, one we must make over and over again, every single day.
