Even so, I can’t help myself as I step forward and wrap my hand around her waist, pulling her against me. “Tell me, Kitten… why the fuck are you letting him touch you?”
“I don’t want to wait anymore. I’m going to write my own story and marry a man of my choosing.”
“I’m ready to collect the favors you’ve all come to owe me throughout the years,” I say. “Every single one of them, at once.”
“I would like to marry your sister, and I will need all of your support to make it happen.”
“You knew,” I murmur, my shoulders sagging in relief. Lex chuckles, and Luca shakes his head. “Xavier, we’ve known for far longer than you could possibly know,” Zane tells me. “Why did you think we kept inviting you to our poker nights?”
“That seat at the table has always been yours, Xavier. It always will be, provided you can win over both our grandmother and sister.”
“I don’t know if it’s love, but I can’t imagine marrying anyone but her.”
“You could love her with all you have, and she might never reciprocate those feelings. Do you wish to marry her, regardless?” “I do.”
“I know you think you hate him,” Grandma says, her voice filled with understanding. “But he’ll love you like you deserve to be loved, Sierra. Xavier will protect you, and he’ll continue to be by your side when I’m no longer able to. I know you don’t want to marry him, but sweetheart… this is my last wish.”
“I don’t know what’s going on between you and him, but it ends now. Don’t fucking test me on this. The only bed you’ll find yourself in is mine, Sierra.”
“Then I’ll wait a million years and a day, Kitten. I’ll wait forever if I need to, so long as you understand that you’re mine as much as I’m yours.”
“Fuck every goddamn misconception you insist on having, and listen to me. I will never, ever, cheat on you. I am yours, and yours only, Sierra, whether you like it or not.”
“Maybe I haven’t been clear enough,” he says, his voice soft. “You’re mine, Sierra Windsor. You can avoid me all you want, but there’s no avoiding this marriage. I’m being as patient as I can be, Kitten, but you crossed a line today. You never should’ve let him touch you at all.”
“You were born to frustrate the fuck out of me, weren’t you?” he asks, his voice pained. I smirk and slide my hand up his chest, around the back of his neck. “Yes,”
“You have no idea just how many times I’ve thought about it,” he whispers, his gaze roaming over my face. “No clue at all.”
“It isn’t really about what I see in him, it’s about what I see in you — and you, my sweetheart, have never had eyes for anyone but him.”
“Xavier, if this is what fidelity looks like for you, I don’t want it.”
“Honestly, just release him,” he says, sounding defeated. “Dion was right. He’s fucking smitten with her. What were we even thinking?”
Dear Kitten, I deeply regret to inform you that I have decided not to leave you at the altar, much to your disappointment, I’m sure. Time for your first act — pretending you’re overjoyed with this gift. It’s the first of many I’ll shower you with throughout our marriage, and nothing will bring me greater joy than seeing you wear it as you walk down the aisle toward me. I picked the best diamonds I could find, and yet, they don’t shine as brightly as you do. I’ll be waiting at the altar; a million years and a day, if that’s what it takes. Forever yours, Xavier
Thank you for marrying my fool of a son.
“You’ve met your match, sweet girl, and I’m beyond grateful I get to live to see you marry him.”
“Put away those claws, Kitten,” I murmur, teasing her. “You don’t want to accidentally damage your new toy, do you?”
I’d planned to make it a quick peck, but one touch, and all my willpower fades away.
It isn’t until I become aware of my brothers’ chuckles that I pull away, my heart racing and my body thrumming with desire. Sierra looks just as flustered, and I can’t help but smile happily. She can pretend all she’d like, but it’s clear she wants me. It isn’t much, but it’s enough for now.
“Not at all. If I look even remotely excited, it’s because I was planning how to kill you in your sleep. Do you have a preferred way to go? Poison, perhaps?”
“That craziness? I get it from my mom, who is walking toward us right now.”
“You don’t have a thing to be sorry about — except maybe my poor tires.” I grin at him. “Says the man that stole my design plans. They were worth a lot more than your stupid tires.”
“You’re fucking breathtaking, you know that?”
PS. Good luck getting your wedding gown off without Xavier’s help. I made the buttons at the back too tiny and too numerous for you to do it yourself.
“You have good taste,” I murmur, surprised how good the champagne is. “Of course I do,” he remarks, without missing a beat. “I married you, didn’t I?”
“Jealous?” I repeat, outraged. “I was never jealous.” “No?” he asks, placing his index finger underneath my chin. “Sure could’ve fooled me.”
“Is that a fucking guillotine?” She laughs, and the sound is like music to my ears. “Lex made it for me,” she explains, sounding a little giddy about it. “It’s a cheese slicer in the shape of a guillotine.”
“Be careful what you ask for, Kitten. There isn’t much I won’t do for you.”
“Don’t ever get hurt on my behalf,” she says, her voice barely above a whisper. “Then I suggest you handle me with care, Mrs. Kingston.”
“I’m well aware that you don’t need my money, but I still want you to have access to it. Perhaps it sounds strange to you, but I always imagined my wife buying whatever she wants with my card.”
Xavier pulls me through, and I gasp in disbelief when I find myself standing in the most gorgeous library I’ve ever seen. It’s got two floors, a gorgeous spiral staircase, and more books than I can count. I’m in a daze as I gently touch the spines of some of the books, my surprise mounting when I realize that at least some of them are romance books — and not just any, but special or first editions of most of my favorites.
I thought I knew what I was getting into when I married him — I was convinced I knew him better than anyone else… but this version of Xavier is one I don’t recognize.
He looks up and smiles, and my heart goes wild.
“Come for your husband, Kitten.”
I lean back in my seat in my own damn conference room as my wife laughs at something Graham said, and all the while, I quietly plot his demise.
“What was that, baby?” I ask, taunting. “I can’t hear your lies over the sound of your desire.”
“Waiting for you to stop running,” he answers, his expression unreadable. “I told you, didn’t I? I’ll wait a million years and a day, if that’s what it takes.”
“I took care of it,” I tell Elijah as I pull up in front of my house, my clothes and hands stained with blood that isn’t mine, my mind numb.
“Sierra,” I moan, my tone meant to be a warning instead of the plea it clearly is.
“That’s my girl,” I groan, my residual anger draining away as I focus on nothing but her. “You’re sucking your husband’s cock perfectly, Sierra.”
“I would have done the same, Xavier. If that had been Sierra, they’d be finding body parts all over the country for months.”
“Go home,” he says, his tone filled with kindness despite his choice of words, “and don’t fucking come back. I don’t want to see you for at least another week. Your presence is keeping me from my wife.” I smile involuntarily as he opens my car door. “I’m going to tell Faye you threw me out.”
