“A baby is easily a strong enough reason to give us another chance,” he finally said. “Besides, we have an incredible foundation. We’re comfortable, have a good life.” He spread his hands. “We like each other.”
The muscles around his jaw ticked. “If you insist, you can go. But you cannot have the baby.” She had to fight to keep from bursting out laughing at how dramatic he was being. “And how do you plan to ensure that?” “By demanding custody, how else?”
“I wonder why he wants the baby,” Brooke said, as she placed the two cartons into her serviceable white fridge. Everything in her kitchen was simple and functional. “He barely knows what to do with a wife. What’s he going to do with a kid?”
“There’s nothing wrong with civility, you know,” Gavin said. “Like standing me up on a special anniversary dinner without calling?” She raised her index finger. “I know. Family emergency, halfway across the country. Because Catherine needed you.”
“You don’t think it’s going to work.” “Nope. He never has any time for me. But at least this way I’ll have something to show for three years of my life with him.”
He’d promised a lot to get her to stay…everything but love. Was she that unlovable?
“I know it bugs you that Gavin’s acting out of character, but he’s trying to convince you not to divorce him. So give him a chance. See what happens,” Brooke said.
Always impeccable, always gracious, Stella Lloyd intimidated Amandine, though she had never done anything to make Amandine feel uncomfortable.
If he knew how she felt about him, would he reciprocate her love…or turn away in embarrassment and pity?
Love is a luxury for the rich. Horseshit. Everyone deserved a chance at love. She deserved it. Her child deserved it.
“There are many reasons,” he began. “Our baby, your complicated pregnancy, my…my feelings for you.” “What are they?” He toyed with a pickle spear then finally said, “Affection. This need to care and provide for you and our child.”
Love. She wanted love. Jesus. It was one thing Gavin didn’t know how to deal with. He had done everything in his power to provide for her, make sure she never lacked for anything. He’d always given money to his ex-girlfriends, and it had made them happy. Why was Amandine different? The idea of losing her made everything seem hopeless.
