Etta’s story consisted of only these years, it would be memorable. The letters she wrote are remarkable. But war, death, and imprisonment followed in harrowing succession. Arriving on Attu in 1941, she and her husband, Charles Foster Jones, were immediately impressed by the Aleut people whom she found “progressive, intelligent, clever, and friendly.”
