Sam was very good at playing normal. But that didn’t mean she knew what it was like.

It was a golden age for men of wealth and taste in Paris by anyone’s measure⁠—the City of Lights afire with poetry and fashion and art, as they led France into a new era of enlightenment. But Sam had seen how everyone else lived. It was as if Tout-Paris itself were a Beast that fed on the blood of the poor.
