This one is for those of us that crave happiness with every heartbeat but don’t dare reach for it. Don’t let fear dictate your future.
“Where did you hide her, Grams?”
“Your turn, Lex. Are you single?” I hesitate for a moment, my conscience weighing heavy on me. I hadn’t expected to speak to her just yet, hadn’t planned to spin a web of lies. “There’s no one but you, Raya.”
“Dance with me, Raya. I dare you to.”
“Joke’s on you, Raya. I have a romance obsessed little sister who happens to love that movie. Though it’s been years, this isn’t the first time I’ve been told to perform this move. You are, however, far nicer about it than that little tyrant ever was.”
“Oh God, I guess that shirt is real after all,”
“You have more photos with your sisters-in-law than your brothers,”
“They’re the ones that keep our family running. They keep us together,” he says, clear reverence in his voice. “Each and every one of those women truly have become sisters to me, and I’m not sure I could see our lives without them anymore. They saved me, and they don’t even know it.”
“That’s what my family does — we love fiercely, and there’s nothing we won’t do for those we love. I’d never let anyone hurt them.”
“To spilled shots, truths, dares, and the way they brought us together.”
Every minute I spend with her just makes my resolve weaken more. I was supposed to figure her out so I could stay ten steps ahead of her, but fuck, she’s got me dancing around in circles with a smile on my face.
“You make me feel entirely out of control, Raya. I swear this isn’t what I had in mind when I asked you to leave with me. I don’t want you to think there’s only one thing I’m after, but fuck, baby, I can’t tear myself away from you.”
You make me throw caution to the wind, all for just another kiss.”
Seeing them together makes me understand why Dad insists that I create memories and live my life to the fullest. It’s what my parents do together each and every day.
“I suggest you end whatever it is you started before I find out who he is.” His gaze roams over my face, lingering on my lips for a moment, before returning to my eyes. “You’re mine, Raya Lewis. You just don’t know it yet.”
“I’ll agree to that, so long as we’re clear on one thing: you’re mine as much as I’m yours, and I do not share. You can hide our marriage as much as you want, but it doesn’t make it any less real.”
“Let me make one thing abundantly clear,” he says, his tone sharp and his eyes locked with mine. “I’m engaged, and I won’t tolerate any rumors that could even remotely upset my future wife.”
“It would make me so happy if you’d give us a real chance, Lex. I’m not asking you to change, you know? I’ll take you as you are.”
I hold up my pinky and smile. “I promise I’ll come home the second I’m even remotely unhappy, okay?” Dad hooks his finger around mine, sealing my pinky-promise. “These kinds of promises are unbreakable,”
“Khush raho,” she whispers, tears in her eyes. Be happy.
She looks so ethereal, I almost want to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming. I haven’t been able to take my eyes off her for even a second.
Raya Windsor will be the death of me, and I’ll die a happy man.
Jealousy looks good on you, Mrs. Windsor.
She looks at me like she actually believes I could ever say no to her. My silly girl. “Of course,” I tell her, my voice soft.
God, I really want to be the man she needs. That smile of hers… I want to protect it as best as I can.
“Today is not the day I get murdered by your father, Raya Indira Windsor.”
It isn’t until I have her head on my chest, her steady breathing easing my anxiety, that I realize she’s single-handedly taken away the fears that normally accompany me in unfamiliar places. But in doing so, she’s becoming something I’m growing to fear.
“You’re better,” she whispers against my lips, before kissing me again. “Better than Hrithik Roshan.”
“I’m right behind you, Raya. Take to the skies, sweetheart, and trust that I’ll be there to catch you if you fall.”
He made me fall so slowly I didn’t even realize it was happening. I just hope he keeps his words and catches me, because I see it now… I’m free falling.
she feels like home.
“Sometimes love isn’t loud and obvious, Raya. Sometimes it’s in the little things, hidden behind layers and layers of exterior protection. Love isn’t always communicated verbally, but that doesn’t make it any less real.”
“That said, you deserve to be loved in the way you need to be loved, angel.
“I’m proud of what you’ve built, and I’m beyond proud to be your wife.”
He reaches for me, only to catch himself and retract his hand. “I’m counting down the days, Raya,” he tells me, his voice soft. “Until I can tell the world you’re mine, until I get to see your ring around your finger every day.”
“You have your own wife,” I snap. “Leave mine alone.”
For years, I was certain I couldn’t let anyone in, and then she came along, shattering all my walls with one single touch.
What if I can’t survive until then? I need fuel, Raya.”
If our situation was different, I would still choose you.”
“My sisters-in-law keep our family running. You’re loved fiercely, Raya, and there’s nothing a Windsor won’t do for those we love.
