Damn. I didn’t think she could get any more beautiful, and then she fucking smiled. This is a fucking disaster — I wasn’t supposed to be so captivated by my future wife.
My eyes fall closed when she presses the sweetest, softest kiss to my cheek, and something odd happens to me. My stomach does a strange fluttery thing, and though I know it isn’t physically possible, I’m certain my heart skips a beat.
“Yet somehow, your eyes keep me far more captivated than the starry skies above us ever could. I’m not sure I like how easily you’ve put me under your spell.”
Every minute I spend with her just makes my resolve weaken more. I was supposed to figure her out so I could stay ten steps ahead of her, but fuck, she’s got me dancing around in circles with a smile on my face.
“I suggest you end whatever it is you started before I find out who he is.” His gaze roams over my face, lingering on my lips for a moment, before returning to my eyes. “You’re mine, Raya Lewis. You just don’t know it yet.”
“I’ll give her everything she could ever want, but I’m not sure I have it in me to love her.” I take a deep breath and look at him, making him an informal promise. “I would try, though. For my wife, I’d try.”
She’s my future wife.”
“I guess it’s too late for you to learn this lesson, but we don’t, under any circumstances, lie to our wives. There are very few occasions during which lying is acceptable, and I’ve listed those for you below.” I frown when there’s only one word on his list: never. “Funny,” I murmur.
“Let me make one thing abundantly clear,” he says, his tone sharp and his eyes locked with mine. “I’m engaged, and I won’t tolerate any rumors that could even remotely upset my future wife.”
He made it so clear he didn’t want to be in a relationship, but his actions aren’t in line with that of a notorious bachelor. He seems committed to me, and I’m not sure what to make of that.
“I love hearing you call me Professor Windsor,” I murmur. “But I think I prefer hearing you call me Lex.”
“Let me be clear, Raya. You’re going to be my wife, and I’m going to spoil you rotten. If I want to send my wife something as simple as flowers in her favorite color, I’m going to do so — regardless of who’s watching. I’m going to treat you so incredibly well, you won’t lack for anything, nor will you yearn for anything.”
“It would make me so happy if you’d give us a real chance, Lex. I’m not asking you to change, you know? I’ll take you as you are.”
Applause erupts around us, but Lex and I can’t take our eyes off each other. He drops his forehead to mine and draws a ragged breath. “Mrs. Windsor,” he repeats, the sweetest smile on his face as he straightens and grabs my hand.
“I love you, Lexington Windsor. You don’t have to try so hard, you know? You’re perfect for me, just as you are.”
I want to do more than try with her — I want to love her, the way she deserves.
“You are what I need,” I whisper. “Every second of every day.”
“I love you, Raya. More than anything — more than flying, more than breathing. I love you with every fiber of my being, with all I am, all I’ll ever be.”
