“Rule number one. You ride in my truck; you let me open the door.”
“You can eat people, too. Particularly women. Or did your fiancé not do that for you, Princess?”
“I didn’t love him.” Cassandra sniffed back tears, but they just kept streaming down her face, streaking her makeup. “I just wanted to be loved.”
“All the shit that gets stirred up and clouds your mind. Eventually it’ll settle. You’ll be able to breathe easier.” He looked ahead. “Doesn’t make it better in the moment. Dust storms happen. It’s okay to close your eyes and stumble through.”
Something powerful flashed in his eyes. There it was. The storm he hid so well beneath his calm. Christian’s hands curled around the wood frame. I wanted those hands. “Cassandra?” My breath caught at hearing him use my full name. “Yes?” “Get that goddamn ring out of my house.”
“But for the record—I wouldn’t be opposed to you bossing me around, cowboy.” I yanked open the door to the school office. “Are you flirting with me?” “Yes. That should be obvious. Now shut up and let me do the talking.”
“This is the only place I want to dominate you. And I think you’re going to like it.”
“The princess thing is cute because you think it gets under my skin, but if you expect me to kneel—” Christian took my wrists in his hands, turned them up, and kissed my palms. “The only time you’ll kneel will be over my face so I can pleasure my queen the way she deserves.”
“That’s right. My fingers in your cunt. My name on your lips. He doesn’t get this body anymore. Not his ring on your finger, not a fucking inkling of him in your mind. I’m going to replace every thought of him. Mark my words, princess.”
“Kings, tyrants, and gods couldn’t resist you, darling. How could I?”
“There’s a lot of gray area in that. You wanna be tied up and teased? I’ve got rope. You want me to pull your hair and turn your ass red? It would be my pleasure, Princess.” He wrapped his arms around me and pulled my body against his chest. “But if you just want me to put you first and make you feel good, you can trust me to do that because making you feel good turns me on.”
“Princes are overrated. I always liked the beast better.”
“It takes a strong cowboy to put up with a bull, and a strong woman to put up with a cowboy.”
“Thank you for being patient with me.” My hair hung around us as I pressed a kiss to her lips. “I love you too.”
“Promise me that you’re staying for good.” I pushed her loose tank top over her bare breasts. “Please stay.” I kissed her sternum, breathing in the warm, woodsy fragrance of her perfume. “I thought I could handle it all, but you made me realize that I don’t have to.” I brushed my lips across hers. “And that I don’t want to. I want it to be you.”
“There are three things I know for certain,” he said as he stood and sifted his fingers through my hair. “The sun is gonna rise tomorrow. My girls love you. And you were meant to be ours.” And I believed them too.
