“Breakfast for dinner. I’m really good at hugs and pancakes.” And delivering orgasms, but that was something I preferred to show women, not tell.
She laughed, and it transformed her, like she’d turned on a light and it radiated through her face. Those brown eyes dazzled, revealing flecks of gold and cinnamon. Her straight white teeth flashed as pink colored her cheeks. Well, fuck. Now I was in trouble.
Never had breakfast for dinner. Never been around horses. Both were problems I wanted to solve.
I couldn’t even cuss her name because I didn’t fucking know her name.
The only woman in the world West would gladly take orders from was his wife. And maybe their daughter, once she was born.
“If I move in, will you throw it in my face every five seconds?” “No, I’m a cowboy. Once upon a time, I thought it would be fun to be a bull rider. We shoot for eight seconds, not five.”
It was unsettling how often I searched for him throughout the night. It was unsettling how often his blue gaze was waiting.
It shouldn’t have surprised me to wake up alone the next morning. Not after she’d been keeping me at arm’s length for three months. But damn if it didn’t burn. It really fucking burned.
“You look like hell.” Sasha yanked the toothbrush from her mouth, her lip curling. “That’s what you come over here to tell me? That I look like hell?” “You do look like hell. And you’re still the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.”
But I hadn’t wanted anyone to know about our night together. Not Emery. Not Indya. Not even West. Sasha was mine and mine alone.
“You’re carrying my Josephine. That’s not exactly freeloading.” My Josephine.
My Josephine. Two words and he made it real. He made it special. He made it so I wasn’t doing this alone.
“I’m grumpy,” I warned. She popped the toothbrush out of her mouth. “Me too.” “Want to be grumpy together?”
“Tell me a lie,” he whispered. “I don’t want you to kiss me.” It came out so fast I couldn’t stop it. What was I doing? What was I saying? His tongue darted out to lick his bottom lip. “Tell me a secret.” Only one secret came to mind. A secret I really, really shouldn’t say. But I did anyway. “I always want you to kiss me.”
“I like Sasha.” “So do I.” “Keep her, all right?” I glanced over Emery’s head, finding Sasha’s beautiful eyes waiting. “That’s my plan.”
I was falling for her. Hell, I’d already fallen.
It wasn’t the injury that had scared me. It was him. I needed him. I needed Jax more than I’d ever needed another person.
“This is an experience. I like these adventures where you get me to fall in love with Montana.” That wasn’t the only purpose of these adventures, as she called them. I needed her to fall in love with me too.
For her, I’d be there too. Always.
Maybe it was finally time to trust. To say fuck it and just fly.
She sniffled, wiping at her face as more tears fell. “Distract me. Tell me a secret.” “I love you.” The words came out in a rush. It was effortless. As automatic as breathing.
But they all faded to a blur as I took Sasha’s face in mine. “I love you. I think I loved you the moment you tried to steal that shopping cart.” “Jax.” Sasha’s eyes searched mine. She didn’t have to say it back. If she wasn’t ready, that was okay. I was ready.
I kissed her, hard and fast, then backed away so she could rest before the next contraction. “Tell me a lie.” “I hate Montana.” A grin tugged at my mouth. “Mission accomplished.” “Now a secret,” she murmured, still breathing hard. “Tell me to tell you a secret.” “Tell me a secret.” “I love you.”
Three words and I could breathe. For the first time in what felt like my whole life, I could breathe. I needed nothing else. Not money. Not fame. Not power or influence. Just Sasha.
Until a sound cut through the haze. A screaming baby girl. My Josephine.
