If he was the sun, by the old gods, she was the moon. Powerful, dark, and overbearing at times. She never left him, nor he her, as if they danced around each other for eternity.
My knight, my savior.
hoped he cared enough to want me, and he could see that every bit of good I had salvaged from that girl was now his. These were hopes I clung to.
I loved that I could drive away his demons so effortlessly as he had done mine.
“The most powerful being in the entire realm is not the World Ender, but the one who protects the World Ender. The one who brought him back from the dead,” the oracle purred.
“You’re cute when you’re homicidal.”
“I have seen evil. I have fought evil gods, monsters, and beings for longer than I care to admit, but when I look at you, I see . . . hope.”
Sometimes death is not the worst option and offers peace in place of suffering.”
“I am extremely selfish when it comes to you.”
He required a pure, safe love, and all I could offer was a vengeful inferno of it. Nothing soft or delicate, my love cut, but I refused to make him bleed for me any longer. That was not a healthy love. Even I knew that.
It was not sharp or piercing but an agony that melted your bones, seared your flesh, and carved a hole so deep into you that you’d pray for a quick death to be with them. So no, it was not love. It was more necessary, like air in my lungs, blood in my veins. It wasn’t just a nebulous emotion that came and went on a whim. This bond was a near-physical thing, tangible and constant.
I could protect my heart, my soul. The problem was, neither of them was mine any longer. They were his and had been for some time now.
There is no one better than you. There never has been.
“How could I not be completely and utterly in love with you?” “You love me?” My heart melted. “With everything I am and everything I ever will be.”
He had offered me his heart, and in return, I’d give him the broken pieces of mine.
“Dianna. Ayla. Akrai. My world. My life. My love. Will you marry me?”
“I would burn the world for you,”
“This?” I scrunched my nose. “This is my happy face.” “Ah. Do you wish to know a secret?” I nodded. He leaned down and whispered, “I’d sell the world to see it every day.”
“I’d destroy several worlds if it meant keeping you safe. You have no idea the limits I’d go for you.”
