If he was the sun, by the old gods, she was the moon. Powerful, dark, and overbearing at times. She never left him, nor he her, as if they danced around each other for eternity.
Perhaps it was truly a funny thing not to realize how broken or damaged you were until someone came along and picked up every single fractured piece and showed you how just being you was enough.
“Oh, I would level the universe for him, but he told me to be good, so I’ll stick to saving him instead.”
Samkiel was a sword and shield, always my protector.
“Resurrection has a cost, and this is mine. Every single Otherworld creature has said it to me, but I didn’t get it, didn’t understand. It,” I pointed to the corpse of the murrak, “said it too. Void.” “Your soul. The cost of saving me was your soul,” Samkiel said, and I flinched. His jaw clenched, and his hands fisted. The pure, blistering anger in his eyes nearly obscured the soul-deep sorrow.
I turned and froze, every muscle in my body seizing. It wasn’t in fear of the hundreds of flying bugs that probably infested this city, but because Samkiel, World Ender, Destruction Incarnate, and the legendary God King throughout all twelve realms, was kneeling before me. His hand was raised, and he held a shimmering silver ring that held a rhombus-cut, clear jewel.
“I love you. You are it for me and have been for a very long time.”
And don’t think for one second I deserve anyone better than you. There is no one better than you. There never has been. No one is more courageous or godsdamn selfless.
“How could I not be completely and utterly in love with you?” “You love me?” My heart melted. “With everything I am and everything I ever will be.”
“Did I misspeak?” he asked, glancing back at me over his armored shoulder. “No, it just sounds like you want to perform a ritual we can’t actually do since I have no soul. We aren’t super, special mates anymore, remember?” “We are to me,” he said, not missing a beat. “We can still perform it. The mark will not appear, but in all ways, you will be what you call in your world my wife.”
“So, how do you feel about being called my husband?” His face lit up. “So much better. I never have to hear you call me your friend again.”
“I love you, Samkiel, and I don’t need a soul to feel that.”
Kaden snapped, attacking with the same blind rage and fury he had proclaimed himself above. And Kaden fell first. I twisted to the side, the gauntlet reforming over my hand. Using my momentum to complete the spin, I swung out with the sword. Kaden’s knees hit the ground with a dull thud, his eyes wide with shock. I watched with satisfaction as his head lolled to the side before slipping from his shoulders.
