“I’ll have to remember you’re a wordsmith. I’m not used to paying special attention to what people are saying. Usually words are words, but with you—” my head tilts, “I get the feeling they’re more.” “Words are everything.”
“You’re not very good at receiving compliments.” “I’m not used to it,” I clarify. “Do you know how somebody gets used to something?” “How?” “Repetition.”
“I knew you’d be along soon. Chocolate covered blueberries are your third favorite food, after tacos and cowboy spaghetti.” “I never told you that.” “You don’t have to be told something to learn it, Royce. You need only watch.”
Paisley wasn’t a background character. She was the whole damn story. A complicated plot, interwoven with subplots. A riveting main character. Internal conflict mixed with shifting goals. Shane was never man enough to read her story.
Do I have a favorite book? Sure do. The tale of Paisley Royce. And I’ll be damned if it doesn’t end in a happily ever after.
Are we our own people? Of course. But do we belong to each other? Absolutely.
