“Don’t use up your energy on those who wrong you, baby,” she’d whisper, running her fingers through my hair. “Vengeance belongs to the Lord.”
“I hope you weren’t saving that first kiss for anyone, Miss Carter,” I say quietly. “Because I think it’s mine.”
“Can I have that again?” she breathes.
She could ask me for the moon, and I’d drag it down for her.
“I need to touch you, kiss you…be inside you. God, girl, I feel like I’m fucking dying.”
The room is permeated with the scent of metal and summertime honeysuckle. I’ll remember it as long as I live. It smells like the day Diane Carter became mine.
“What do you want most in the whole world?” I ask, staring up at the ceiling.
He rumbles in his chest, leaning his head back against the wall. “What you just gave me.”
“Are you trying to romance me?” she whispers.
“I’m just trying to make you feel special,” I say. “To make up for fucking you like a whore in a little while.”
The only thought I have in my head is a dangerous one. Mine. Mine. Mine.
Sweet, little Diane Carter is mine, come hell or high water.
“Or what?” I whisper. “You won’t touch me.”
“No.” He shakes his head. “But I’ll tie you up with my belt and fuck the sass out of you.”
“Where I should have gone a long time ago,” I say savagely. “I’m going to get my girl back.”
“Revenge belongs to God,” she whispers. “But sometimes, God is just a man who loves you enough to save you.”
“I have you, darling,” he says. “And this time, I’m keeping you.”
“Are you really a bad man?” I ask. I still sound so childish. He clears his throat. “I don’t know, darling,” he says. “But even if I am, I’m in your corner.”
