How does one rise to the top of so many armed criminals so young? Is there a box on the job application to check that reads: I’ve killed at least five whole humans?
Cockiness mixed with desperation is a dangerous combination.
Fuck zip-ties. Why are they so handy in so many situations?
Why am I even doing his stupid dishes? He choked me. Zip-tied me. Cut me with a knife. And he’s technically holding me against my will now, right? But for some reason, I trust that he doesn’t actually mean me harm. Isn’t that fucked?
Spinning my lip ring, I wait for his anger over the clothes I stole from his closet. Cain just ruffles his damp hair. “You’re a bit of a tornado, aren’t you? You definitely need something to do until we can get rid of you.”
Braving rejection, I lean forward to rest my forehead against his collarbone. “Can’t help it. You’re just so… ugh.” He chuckles. “Ugh?” “Yeah. Ugh. Sexy. Commanding. Vicious. Can you be rough with me? Please,” I plead. “Either that, or I’ll have to take a blunt object to your mirrors.” “What the fuck.” But Cain lets out another low laugh. “Are you threatening vandalism to get me to hurt you?”
Another hour into our workout and photo session, which has turned quite dirty, I’m convinced Rev is a villain. Together, with my chaos and his lack of remorse, the two of us borderline on a national threat.
“Huh.” Rev slams a loaded magazine into his gun and cocks it. “Honestly thought you’d be better suited for knives. I wanted to see you go off like a little ninja cat.” “I like sharp things, too,” I say. “Oh, kitten. You are trouble,” Rev praises, waggling his eyebrows at Cain.
“Shower. Coffee. Work.” “Sex. Sex. Sex,” he replies, and when I turn my head to look at him, his goofy little grin releases the invisible binds that tied themselves around my chest when I found him in that fucking alley.
“I know you aren’t mine by blood, but that never did matter to me, you know that?” Jakey says. “My boy went to heaven, and I got to pull you out of hell.”
“Ezra. Baby. Etch this into your brain. I will wait eternity for you. And I will do it standing by your side. It took me years to get to where I’m at now mentally, and I’m still not convinced I’m worthy of you. So don’t ever think that I won’t be patient. Not for a single minute.” His words burrow deep into my chest, both painful and relieving at the same time. All I can manage in response is a nod before I stretch up on my toes to kiss him.
