Jakey restored my faith in humanity. He wanted to care for me like the parent I’d never had, but I quickly realized how much he needed me to take charge.
My brain replays the soundtrack of my life. Not safe. Not safe. Never safe.
Was it fucked up that I find myself attracted to him when I know he likes to play hide the knife in the human body?
I’m slammed against the metal surface by the murderer apparently named Cain. As in Cain Vincent. The fricken CEO.
How long has he been watching me? Shouldn’t the CEO of a billion dollar company have more important things to do than babysit a low-life thief?
“Do I look like a liability?” Rev’s grin is wicked. “Oh, you’re a liability. Just not in the way Cain thinks. What’s your name, pretty boy?” “Ezra,” I reply. “Just Ezra.”
Why did the little thief have to be so fucking pretty? Who the fuck has a right to look like that?
I pinch the bridge of my nose. I’ll be fighting a headache today, no doubt. “What in god’s name are you?” “Could be a changeling.” “A what?”
Ezra fiddles with his lip ring. “A mythical creature swapped with a human baby at—”
Fuck this irritating prickle of concern. I want to turn him inside out. Learn all of his secrets. Check him for internal wounds.
I glance down at myself. “Should I change out of his clothes? I didn’t have anything else...” Rev chuckles. “You are too cute, you know that? Completely innocent. When Cain finally accepts that, you’re going to set fire to his world, pretty boy.”
“You’re mercenaries,” I reply without hesitation. Rev shrugs. “We prefer the title private military contractors.
He’s beautiful all the time, but when he’s not trying to hide his warmth under scowls and shadows, he’s stunning. More brilliant than the sun. I ache to have that smile directed at me.
“Need what, beautiful boy?” My eyelids flutter. “Need you.” One of his hands runs up my spine, wrapping around the back of my neck and tugging me until our mouths collide.
Every encounter I’ve had with someone physically has been against my wishes, except with Cain.
Leo James. And out of stock? What the fuck does that mean? Do I even want to know?
“He trusts you, Cain.” “And I’ve done nothing but hurt him!” I shout back.
You’re going to convince yourself to create distance, and it’s going to upset him. He needs you.” Rev’s speaking words that make too much fucking sense for someone clinically diagnosed as a psychopath.
