I look up at the sound of the voice—and find myself staring at a girl my age. Scratch that. A beautiful girl my age.
“It’s been way too long for me too.” Several years long, but I don’t mention that last part. “I noticed you looking at me.” “And I noticed you noticing me.”
He presses a kiss to my belly button. “Freckles here too,” he murmurs. “Adorable.”
And even though I’m the one with stars swimming in my vision, he thanks me.
“I did it,” I blurt. Her eyes go as wide as the chocolate chip cookies in the bin next to the register. “Oh my God. Tell me everything!”
and to get Little Miss Red Ryder-hood out of my head.
“No, he was . . .” I sigh, unable to fake any interest. “Fine, yes, he was a bit of an ass. But whatever, I just wanted to blow him.” He blinks. “We’re going to unpack that later.” “We?”
Izzy giggles, poking me in the stomach. “He likes you.”
Then she shuts the door in my face.
“Penny, will you come to the ladies’ with me?” Bex asks. As they wind their way through the tables away from us, James leans in. “Friends, huh?”
He swipes his hand through his damp hair. “Penny, why are you lying? What happened?”
don’t realize it until he takes in a broken breath, but he’s tearing up. He pulls a tissue out of his pocket and carefully wipes his eyes, then clears his throat.
It’s in my chest like a breathing, palpable thing. Not friendship. Something deeper. Eventually, I won’t be able to contain it, and I’m terrified that the moment that happens, I’ll lose Penny for good.
The Callum character is me, right? I’ve always wanted to be a billionaire werewolf who gives really good head At least the last part is already true . . . . . . . I regret everything
Why would I have wasted time with someone who isn’t her?
“Even if I did, it’s just a dick. Dicks, generally speaking, are not that special.” I put on a wounded face. “And here I thought you liked my disco stick.”
“You’re calling me Callahan because it helps you pretend there’s nothing deeper going on here,” I say in a low voice. “Cut the shit, Penny. You know my name. Say it.”
“And if you don’t like that, I don’t care if you demote me from captain or bench me.” He glances over at me, his gaze softening. “I just want a chance with her.”
“You still think I wouldn’t support you?” He pinches the bridge of his nose, shuddering in another breath. “Did you really think I wouldn’t support this?”
“That’s okay, Pen. Let’s talk about it over dinner.”
I know you’re writing about very important fictional smutty goodness But I’m just saying, if you need someone to act out scenes with, I’m right here And super bored Actually, I’m writing a battle scene Oh??? Of course /that’s/ what gets you excited I literally have a sword tattooed on my body Just get over here and kiss me
“But love is almost always worth the risk.”
