“You will always be someone else’s villain, whether you deserve the title or not. Your duty is to ensure their hate is unjustified.”
“You said bird seed.” His father stopped behind him. “But owls eat other animals. They are fierce predators.” Their gazes collided in the mirror. “They swallow their food whole, and when someone threatens what is theirs, they attack without question.” His father smirked. “Seems perfect to me.”
“If I hate the Mountain Kingdom, you’ll let me move back?” Did she think he would deny her anything? “We will move back. I will follow you anywhere, little mate, even to hell if that’s where you wish to go.”
“I’m only doing this because I feel like I know you,” she said defensively, but why she felt the need to defend her actions, she didn’t know. They were mates. “I don’t jump into bed with men simply because they ask.” He turned to her slowly. “Good. I try to avoid bloodshed when I can.”
“I don’t need a line to know what’s considered good or bad, but if I did, there isn’t a line I wouldn’t cross for you.” He lowered himself and brushed his lips against hers. “I will write your name on my chest with the blood of any man who tries to covet what is meant to be ours. Innocent or not.”
My cold-blooded killer. She jolted at her own thoughts. “What is wrong with me?” she whispered, rubbing her eyes. Gilpin was an innocent man. “You’re perfect,” Rennick said with so much conviction she almost believed it herself. “I’m going to hell,” she muttered, hating herself for being unnaturally turned on by his words.
“Stop threatening to kill people,” she whisper-yelled, calming slightly at his touch. “You can’t murder someone for not liking me. You would likely have no kingdom left.” He straightened and shrugged. “It would be easier to manage.”
“I’m a good king, but I am not my father. I am not good. My soul is not beautiful or bright or even a shade of grey. It is an unforgiving inferno, and if our people refuse to accept you as their queen, they will burn their way into the afterlife.”
He lowered himself to one knee and held on to her hips. “Get off the ground,” she hissed, glancing at the others. “I just needed you to bend a little.” “I am where I have always been, love: at your feet, waiting for you to claim me as your own.”
