It was fitting that forgetting that important lesson was his downfall. He’d simply expected it would be a blade, not a beautiful woman, that broke him.
He warred with opponents, he warred with who he was, and he warred with being the expendable son. Fate had a sense of humor in making him a very reluctant king.
Remembering was hard, but forgetting might as well have been forgetting himself.
Cecilia had been made and unmade, and now she had the strange sensation of trying to rebuild herself from nothing.
I love you. Not part of you. Not just your beautiful face. I love all of you. And now that I’ve had it all, I can’t settle for less.”
He knew her the best. If she was lost, he would help her find herself. Rainer would remember her even when she couldn’t. Cecilia Reznik was unforgettable.
But it felt like death had placed a veil between her and the outside world. Life had lost some of its color, or perhaps she had lost her connection to its usual brightness.
That scar reminded her that she had been broken by death; that she’d needed to be saved by Rainer—and
Rainer’s love had saved her. And still, she didn’t trust him to love her enough to step into the dark with her.
Because that’s the only way someone could ever have you—if you choose them. It felt like you chose me before, but it has not felt that way since—”
“There’s nothing about you that I don’t want to see. I crescent promise. I want to know all of you. Will you let me?”
You fought for everyone else, but now you won’t fight for yourself. You made me stab you in the heart to save me.
I will come for you in every darkness, and I will carry you out, or I will sit with you there until you can walk out on your own.”
“You were right behind me the whole time?” “I was, and I always will be,”
The one inside her right hip bone, the one under her right breast, and the three that dotted up the left side of her neck. Seven freckled stars that made up the constellation of Cecilia.
He felt as though he was getting to know her all over again, and it was a beautiful thing to fall in love with new sides of her each day.
Cecilia was her own universe, and he never stopped learning her, never stopped finding new things to love, never stopped wanting to explore her.
She was a beautiful mess of wild, unbridled love and joy and flaws and longing, and she was his.
I’m just for you, Rain.
She was the storm always waiting to sweep him away, and he was eager to let her.
It was only her scent he’d follow blindly through the labyrinth of grief. It was only her light that illuminated the way out of the dark forest of hurt.
He had not just loved Cecilia Reznik. He had survived her, and he was not sure he could do it again.
Evan loved watching her expressions. He was learning Sylvie like a new language, and he enjoyed the moments when he got past her perfect armor.
I’m thinking about letting you ruin me—wishing I could ruin you back.”
“To women saving the realm,” Cecilia started. “To men remembering to thank them,” Sylvie finished.
“Why be modest when I can be honest? I am fabulous and everyone should know it.”
It wasn’t that he didn’t feel it. Gods knew he did. It was that it scared him like nothing else in life.
‘Marry someone smart, or you’ll spend your life making dull conversation and worrying. If you marry someone smart, you’ll always have another mind to tackle life’s problems, and you’ll never worry that she can’t handle herself.
We warriors are rough and aren’t good at taking care of ourselves, and it’s not such a bad thing to have someone who can teach you how to be kind to yourself.’”
Evan was very much in love with and in awe of her. He did not know why he couldn’t simply say the three words that would let her know.
Don’t let that temper rule you. Either the rage feeds you, or it feeds on you. Don’t be a meal.”
I hate that your heart is safe around me when mine is always in peril around you.”
Rainer bristled. “I’m not afraid to punch a king.”
I feel no pity for you. I simply care about you. We all need someone sometimes. It’s okay to admit that you need comfort, Xan.
“You taught me how to love. I’m sorry that I taught you how to stop.” She frowned. “I never stopped.”
