“Dance with me?” He stands up suddenly, pulling me to my feet with him. There are warm café lights hanging all around us, and the only sounds are the few cars passing on the road. “But there’s no music,” I tell him, a little thrown off-kilter from the change in topics. He pulls out his phone, swiping through his apps until he finds a song and presses play. Setting the phone on the bench, he takes me in his arms, and we begin to sway. “Conversations in the Dark” by John Legend is trickling through the phone. Ale is spinning me around, and as he pulls me close to his chest, it starts to snow.

“I had to bark at him to get him to leave.” My eyes widen in surprise, finally meeting hers. “That’s right. That poor, broken man came knocking on our door for the hundredth time this week, and I barked at him like a damn rabid dog to get him to leave. I don’t have many regrets in life, but this is definitely one of them. That man looked like I had just kicked his puppy, and I couldn’t let him in, so I barked at him, Kat!

“I love you like you’re the first and the last breath of fresh air I’ll ever take.” He presses another kiss to my hair. “Like you’re the blood running through my veins,” he whispers into my neck.
