The Shadow King crafts living sins out of thin air and corrupts everything he touches, and I have to meet him in two days. All because my father made a deal to spare my mother from an incurable disease, back when she was pregnant with me.
A part of me is tempted to make her life hell while another yearns to see her smile.
A terrible sickness has taken root in me—and my kingdom—because I trusted the wrong woman. That won’t happen again.
Nothing will get in the way of my duty. Not even a witty, flawless beauty like Penelope Darcy. I’ve got new rules.
The curse destroyed the part of me that could love, or even feel true attraction or desire. Until Nell, my pesky inner voice chants.
The king lowers his voice. “I told him not to get attached to strays, but he doesn’t listen. Look at him, so insolent. Pretending he’s not dying to touch you himself. What a joke.”
he stops and kisses the back of my ear instead. “When we fuck, I’ll make him watch, and believe me…he’ll enjoy it.”
“Now, walk into the pool,” the king adds, a hint of amusement at the tip of his wicked tongue.
Only the devil of spring, Violet “Devi” Eros, ever held enough power to ruin me, and ruin me, she did, though it wasn’t exactly her fault. Only she knows the truth about my demise, and I hate her for it.
“But don’t lie to yourself, Samhain. Whoever the poor girl is…you’re going to destroy her.” I step over the rowan threshold, not looking back. “Don’t I know it.”
Rye is the only woman from my past worth mentioning, but one woman is enough to wreck everything.
