The day shines light on all of the horrible creatures that roam the ground and sky. It exposes them and their gnashing teeth, primed to bear down against my throat.
“No one thing is entirely good. Just like a garden has weeds and flowers that wither. There’s a balance between light and dark. The light needs the darkness so it can shine, and without light, there would be no hope.”
Being vulnerable is one of the bravest things a person can do.”
“Your biggest enemies are the lies that are trapped in here. Don’t listen to them.”
“I’d kneel before you all day if that’s what it took,” he says, his voice dipping deeper than I’ve ever heard it.
“Scared of a kiss, little soldier?” I tease.
He huffs a laugh and brings his lips against my ear. “Be a good girl and stop talking.”
“You will be my undoing,” a voice groans into my mind, crowding my thoughts—his voice.
I’ve been alone for so long that I’m not used to asking for what I need, but I’m trying to learn.
“You are not other women.” The look on his face grows serious. “I can promise you that.”
“Your pain is so heartbreakingly clear to me, and I want to take it all away.” Tears fill my eyes, and the stars above our heads turn blurry. “And who gets to see your pain?” I ask into his mind. Out of the corner of my eye, I see him turn his head away from the sky to look at me. “When you’re here, there is none.” My breath catches.
“I find that it’s often the men who flaunt their masculinity the most are the biggest cowards,” I mutter. “They’re afraid of showing how weak they truly are.”
“You occupy my every thought.” He’s so close to me that I can feel his words rumbling through his chest. “Do you not see the radiance that shines inside of you? Because it’s all I can think about.”
“The world shattered into pieces the moment I saw you. Everything around me completely dissolved into nothing. When your eyes first met mine, the world began to piece itself back together. And at the center of it was you.”
He pauses, his eyes searching mine. “This is me giving myself to you,” he says in a low, gravelly voice. “You are worthy of more than any man could ever offer you, but I vow to you that I won’t rest until I give you everything you need. If you asked for the stars, I would find a way to carve
“I’m already yours,” I whisper. “Every infuriating word you utter—I want to hear every single one of them. You give me what I need before I even know what to ask. You’ve been right here, all along. When my world felt unsteady, you found a way to keep me grounded.”
I never realized that all I needed was someone to open themselves to me first—to show me it’s okay to let someone in. It doesn’t make me weak to give my heart to him. It makes me stronger.
I say without an ounce of doubt, “I am violence.”
“I will always find a way back to you,” he sends into my mind, his emerald eyes frantic with fear. “I don’t want to be here if you aren’t here.” Something in his eyes scares me, but I don’t have time to react. “Don’t hate me for this.” He screams, pushing against the bonds keeping everyone else restrained. And before I can stop him, he grabs me and shoves me out of the way.
