“Beauty is deceiving,”
have you seen the way Graylen moves?” another girl says in a lowered voice. “I’d let him punch me any day.”
“Sometimes people are darker on the inside than you realize,” he says. “Even the brightest of lights flicker to welcome the darkness.”
“I’ll never leave you,” Graylen says softly, and I let out a sob. “Focus on me. Let it out; I can handle it.”
“You’re safe here.” Graylen’s voice soothes something broken in me. “I won’t let you lose control.”
“If I wanted you to entertain me, I wouldn’t choose to talk.”
“I’d kneel before you all day if that’s what it took,” he says, his voice dipping deeper than I’ve ever heard it.
“My fire never cools for you,” he murmurs.
“You will be my undoing,” a voice groans into my mind, crowding my thoughts—his voice.
Graylen, who doesn’t seem to be listening. Instead, his eyes are on me. “Try not to fail. It would get awfully boring without you getting mad at me every day,” he whispers into my mind. I roll my eyes, but a smile slips onto my face.
“I wouldn’t do that.” His voice fills my mind, stopping me. “You won’t be able to stay quiet for what I have planned.” “Something you plan for all of your women?” I tease. “You are not other women.” The look on his face grows serious. “I can promise you that.”
“And who gets to see your pain?” I ask into his mind. Out of the corner of my eye, I see him turn his head away from the sky to look at me. “When you’re here, there is none.” My breath catches.
“If you need an excuse to go for a walk to get some space, I have several ideas on how to make that happen.” Graylen’s voice drifts into my mind and pulls me from my thoughts. “Just say the word. Or don’t. Now might not be a good time to bring this up. Blink twice? Cough? Tug your ear?”
“If you have a mark on your neck, it’ll be because I put it there,” he murmurs. “And I can promise that it will be from pleasure, not pain.”
“And I’m still chasing you, little princess. I will always chase you—as long as you let me.”
“You occupy my every thought.”
“The world shattered into pieces the moment I saw you. Everything around me completely dissolved into nothing. When your eyes first met mine, the world began to piece itself back together. And at the center of it was you.” A
“There is no one else, Lunaria,” he says into my mind without pulling his lips away from mine. “There will never be anyone but you.”
“Good girl. Now come here.”
“I’ve got you,” he murmurs.
He pauses, his eyes searching mine. “This is me giving myself to you,” he says in a low, gravelly voice. “You are worthy of more than any man could ever offer you, but I vow to you that I won’t rest until I give you everything you need. If you asked for the stars, I would find a way to carve them out of the sky and hand them to you—Caelum be damned.”
“I’m already yours,” I whisper. “Every infuriating word you utter—I want to hear every single one of them. You give me what I need before I even know what to ask. You’ve been right here, all along. When my world felt unsteady, you found a way to keep me grounded.”
“I am violence.”
“I will always find a way back to you,” he sends into my mind, his emerald eyes frantic with fear. “I don’t want to be here if you aren’t here.”
