“Again, Dena.”
Nicknames blossom between acquaintance and something more.
Hera was the only weakness I allowed myself to have, the only person I let get close enough. And look what it got her—a death sentence.
“Good form, hun. Maybe you have learned something.”
Because now there is her and every moment after. I had never known happiness before her. But if there is to be an after in which she doesn’t exist, I know I never will again.
Hera he wants more than me. Hera he’s willing to risk everything for.
“I was walking the halls and felt your power.”
“I knew it was you. And I… I needed to see you.”
“And I know that I’m the fighter, and you’re the lover.”
“I know that not a single person has convinced me to care about them before you.”
you’re the embodiment of everything I am not. And yet, here I am, crawling back to you as though I’ve left a piece of myself behind.”
regret not telling you how much I like it when you blow those bangs out of your eyes, or the way you clap after finishing a row of stitches. I regret smothering every smile you made me want to give you. And I regret not telling you the truth. But most of all, not saying goodbye.”
“Come see me. Please. I don’t think I can handle losing both of you.”
“I’ll find one,” I murmur. “Steal it back if I must. For you.”
have every intention of talking about you till morning.”
No, I trip into love, unable to slow down long enough to question these feelings or the person I’ve dumped them
“I need you.”
“Don’t,” he murmurs against my hair. “I’ll only disappoint you.”
“I made him, and every other man I found, memorize every one of your features. I described the color of your eyes and the length of the lashes lining them. The warmth of your skin, and the specific curl of your hair. Your nose, your lips, your smile. Down to the very scar on your palm from one of my daggers, I made them memorize you. So, yes, he knew exactly who you were and still decided to ignore my threats.”
“I would argue that nothing I could do for you would top this humiliation.”
Her eyes flutter in a way that makes me wonder how to get her to do it again. “Do I?” I swallow, forcing the feeble words from my mouth. “So long as you’ll take me.” “And if I don’t?” she asks softly. “Then no one ever will.”
It’s the way my thoughts never cease to wander toward her, my heart falling senselessly after.
“I would have waited another nineteen years if it meant you were the first good memory I was gifted.”
“Dena, if I looked at you while you were talking, I can’t guarantee that I’d be paying attention to what you were saying.”
“I always wondered how something could shine so bright, even while being swallowed in darkness.”
“I’m quite sure that even the stars are envious of you.”
“Because one day—far from now—you will be up there beside them, outshining every single one.”
“And will you be beside me up there?” “If I should be so lucky.” “Promise me,” she murmurs sternly. “I don’t want to be alone.” I nod against her hair. “I promise, Dena.”
“You. How can one person be so good?”
“It’s not very hard when you’ve been practicing your whole life.”
“See you in the sky,”
“You are quite the oddity, Dena.”
“Thank you, honey. I’ll wear it fondly.”
“You are the sweetest thing I have never tasted.” Another brush of his knuckles. “And I doubt I’ve craved anything more.”
think you’re my little piece of perfection.”
“I don’t fall for someone. I trip uncontrollably toward them before inevitably hitting the ground.”
“I’m counting down the hours, Dena.”
Because I have a pretty boy of my own. Though, I can admit that Pae is quite a lucky woman.
Kai would prefer Paedyn make a statement. Stand out.
it’s Kai who is destined for Paedyn, no matter how tragic their story. No matter the opposite roles they play in this life. But maybe things will be different in the next.
Unwanted tears prickle my eyes at the vision before me. “You look dangerous. But in the most elegant of ways.”
I could surprise her. Sit with her. Comfort her. It’s dangerous, but it’s for Dena.
Maybe I’m not searching for my Adena, but someone else entirely.
I’m not sure she knows how good she is. How her worth is so much more than what power is or isn’t running through her veins.
I’m counting the stars until I see Mak shining beside me. The
Her eyes are trained on the sky. I picture the big, hazel gaze I loved to be looked at with, and choose to remember them that way.
She’s counting the stars.
“Just count the stars, Dena.”
“Just count the stars.”
“See you in the sky.”
