Mom is still Mom, isn’t she? Somewhere deep down? Trapped in her own body? There has to be a scrap of sanity left, just a glimmer of common sense buried deep beneath the calcifying wave of conspiracy theories shellacking her brain, one queasy meme after another.
At first, it was easy to discredit his crackpot talk.
They are GOP pod people now. This is eons beyond just some silly ideological divide between generations. This isn’t about some goddamn election, who’s voting for who. It has everything to do with the news. Who exactly his parents are getting their fax—sorry, facts—from. Their channel of choice has changed them from the inside out.
It was digital VD just waiting to happen. Devon knew better than to— CLICK —but who doesn’t want to feel better about themself? Who doesn’t want to be a healthier, happier you? Happiness was on the other side of that hyperlink. Healthiness was only a simple tap away. Devon wanted to— WAKE UP —so she aligned her cursor over the cerulean-tinted letters and— click (I probably shouldn’t be clicking on this, should I?) click —that was all it took. A tiny aperture. A digital window. A gateway, now open.
Everybody knew Fax News was raw red meat for its Republican viewers. Asher wasn’t one of those gun-toting, bumper-sticker-boasting, baseball-cap-wearing types. Socially liberal, fiscally conservative. That was where he landed on the political spectrum.
He switched back to Fax. No war at all. Just aimless anger. Anger at what they’re doing in the public schools. Anger at the libraries. Anger at vaccination mandates. Anger at—at— Jesus, anger at just about everything.
Anderson Cooper made him feel stupid. Fax didn’t make him feel stupid. Fax just made him feel.
This particular type of spirituality made sense to Devon. Rather than pack the fam in the car and head to church every Sunday, her services were right here, in her feed.
