“What is someone with a pretty little voice like that doing out here?” I asked, trying to think quickly of how to get out of this.
You chose to camp here and plot murder. And you chose to dedicate your short, mortal life to killing my kind. My loyalty is to the crown of Velyra, and anyone who threatens that is my enemy. My enemies are dealt with accordingly.”
I couldn’t help but notice that the female was sitting on the lap of someone whom I could only assume was the captain.
She was probably just the captain’s whore who got lucky with her bow earlier.
“Your lies are like a siren’s song, Solus. They roll off your tongue so sweetly, beautifully. Almost enough to convince me,” he said in a low, alluring tone.
“Well, as you said earlier, the sea captain’s relationship with you is none of my concern. I will say that the rate my body can heal is none of yours.”
Was he a halfling? Did those still exist? Any halfling that was known of back in Isla had been executed at the queen’s command when I was just a babe.
“Is it respect you want, Elianna?” he asked, his tone alluring and wicked.
I didn’t think a human could make that sound.
“Once again, you lie to me so beautifully.”
He gently placed his calloused hand on my knee. “…Because maybe I am starting to realize that just because you are not human, doesn't mean you haven’t suffered at the hands of horrific kinds of fae and humans alike. And that being said, I know that someone who has taken a whip to her back multiple times by someone I'm assuming she trusted, then leads the armies of warriors that don’t respect her, and yet still keeps the secrets of her kingdom to protect the ones she loves…” He paused for a moment. “Is someone I would want on my side.”
My lips parted slightly, and I opened my mouth to speak once more when he cusped the back of my neck with his hand, pulled my face to his, and fiercely pressed his lips to mine.
Did he feel the same pull toward me that I did with him?
so hard that I practically felt it myself.
Yesterday’s headache was clearly lingering.
I noticed at the same time he did that there was only one bed.
“And then you touched her.” He let out a breathy laugh. “You will die for that.”
“I couldn’t let you die. Even that first night on the ship. I thought about letting you drown, but I couldn’t do it. The thought of you even being injured…I can’t explain it. It feels as if flames ignite within my very veins and light my entire existence on fire. It's not an option I was willing to accept. Nor will I ever.”
“From this moment moving forward, you are no longer my enemy or my prisoner. Members of each side have committed acts of extreme cruelty and horror. That no longer speaks for the entirety of either race. We are going to figure everything out. Together.”
“Beware of the day the pillar falls, for an heir will rise of blood and malice…”
“And when the moment comes that the enemy weeps, a stranger of kin shall forge the way for the one who was promised.”
two pillars.
I never felt anywhere near this way about Kellan, but I could never tell Jace that.
couldn’t have him lose Zaela. I didn’t care that she’d rather see my head on a spike than work with me.
“If they take her, they will kill her, and I refuse to allow that to happen. It isn’t a fucking option. I promised her, Zae. I promised her that!”
Without hesitation, she spat right in his face. “Go fuck yourself,” she seethed, her lip curling back in an animalistic snarl. Now that’s my Lia.
I was up and running to her before I even had a plan. I unsheathed my sword and promptly severed the head of one of the crew members that had been on the outskirts of the crowd,
“Please, Kellan, just let him go!” Lia shouted through tears. “You have me. You got what you came for. Just let him go. You can do whatever you want to me. Just please do this one thing.” He whipped to her. “Shut your fucking mouth. I’ll deal with you later.” My heart was racing to the point where I thought it may explode in my chest. She was trying to sacrifice herself to get me out of here.
“No, wait. Don’t you fucking touch her!”
He lashed out at me, swiping the blood coated blade across my face, narrowly missing my right eye. I heard the sizzling of my skin melting away first, and then felt the excruciating, unbearable pain that followed. A fire ignited within my veins as my own blood felt as if it were bubbling beneath my flesh.
Then I realized it was how much pain I felt. I felt his pain.
This couldn’t be possible. The only way you could feel another’s pain…their true pain, physical and emotional, was if you’re their…mate.
You will die for the havoc and devastation you caused this village of innocents. And you will die for harming what’s mine.”
His grin promised an excruciating death, but I refused to let him see any fear…even though it was consuming my entire being.
He didn’t even give me a moment to brace myself before the whip cracked, slicing my back open. A scream tore from my throat from the soul consuming stinging that now vibrated through my entire being.
