I looked up into his sea-blue eyes and batted my eyelashes, distracting him. Before he had a chance to realize, I tilted my neck back and then head-butted him so hard that my own vision blurred.

“There’s no such thing as trolls, Solus!” she mocked at me. “What the fuck do you call that then, huh?”

“I couldn’t let you die. Even that first night on the ship. I thought about letting you drown, but I couldn’t do it. The thought of you even being injured…I can’t explain it. It feels as if flames ignite within my very veins and light my entire existence on fire. It's not an option I was willing to accept. Nor will I ever.”

I took her chin in my fingers and lifted her gaze to mine. “From this moment moving forward, you are no longer my enemy or my prisoner. Members of each side have committed acts of extreme cruelty and horror. That no longer speaks for the entirety of either race. We are going to figure everything out. Together.”

I continued stalking around the village, forcing myself to carry on through the exhaustion and intense pain that radiated through my body. I just didn’t remember taking any hits from our attackers. I was too focused on moving everyone to safety.
