“I don’t know if I can do this James, the queen…she still does not know of this. Of us. What will she do? If she is anything like her father, she will have me–”
“This is not going to go as well as you are for some reason thinking…” Lukas greeted me on a sigh, as I quietly shut the heavy door.
“I believe you give her far too much credit for kindness she has never truly shown,” Lukas stated.
He cleared his throat nervously. “It is an honor, Your Grace. And while I respect you and what you are about to do…please tread lightly when speaking to Queen Idina. And I say this as your friend.”
Callius. Now if anyone rubbed me the wrong way, it was my wife’s personal guard, who also ran our sea fleet. Something had always been off about him, but he was appointed by her father, and she had always seemed comfortable around him, so I never brought it up in discussion.
ANd THAT should tell you most of what you need to know regarding his loyalty, intenrions, and the person tour wife truly in.
“You take it too harshly. These males are prepared to die for their kingdom and get rid of the disgusting human filth that remains in this world once and for all.” “The human lifespan is a fraction of ours. These people fighting us were not even alive when this war began…”
He bent down, putting his lips near my ear so others could not hear, and said, “Your mother’s eyes. I have missed you, daughter.” My heart clenched, but I shushed him so others would not gain too much curiosity about what was said.
"Ah, yes," he said, as he wrapped an arm around my shoulder, and his other around Avery's. "Let's go, my favorite, beautiful ladies. You too, sons."
“It is just that I know his ship is docked in the harbor and I would love to know why it is acceptable for him to not come here and report on our victory.”
“Indeed, of course, no battle comes without loss, unfortunately. We lost seventy-four in total, including the soldiers who passed on the way home due to you refusing us healers.”
“I did not threaten you, little prince. I simply said that I hope that beast…” I pointed to the wyvern, which now had its full attention on me. “Eats you.” I smiled. “How about I feed you to it and call it a day?” he retorted. I shrugged. “Well, I suppose I would be tastier, with you being just bones and all…” I crossed my arms as I finished speaking.
I grabbed the black curtains next to me and whipped them open, filling the room with the late morning sunlight. I blinked numerous times to adjust my vision to the blinding light, and was horrified to see that Lia was sitting on top of the room's table by the door, picking her nails with the dagger that I left there the night prior. She looked up to me, and as her green eyes met mine, she smiled and started waving the dagger at me in greeting. Fuck.
My breath caught as I peered inside of the decorative box to see the most stunning dagger I had ever laid my eyes on. The iron blade was black as night, and marked throughout it were swirling designs carved from polished obsidian. The shined hilt crafted with unbelievable detail and stained an emerald green so dark that it resembled the blackness of the blade until reflected in the late morning sun. The last feature I noticed made my heart almost stop in my chest. At the very top of the hilt, there was the head of a wolf carved from white antler.
“Kellan’s cheating on me,” I said on a dry laugh, refusing to meet his stare. Without skipping a beat, he replied, “Would you like me to have him hung in the city square?” I nearly choked on the laugh I let out. “Who are you and what have you done with my father?” Chuckling, he replied, “Your wish is my command, princess. I never liked that male, anyway.”
“I will never have respect for someone that does not show it to me,” I finally spoke, my eyes darting back and forth between Kellan and the queen. “But I will do what is needed for the crown and the Kingdom of Velyra.”
Lukas snorted. “Mate? Avery, you must not be able to hear yourself. Just because they claimed to be with each other, does not mean they were mates. That connection is rare to begin with, but someone like Kellan will never deserve to have one of those. And definitely not your si–” He cleared his throat. “Definitely not Lia.”
I feel like Avery pretended not to notice but actually knows. Maybe the King told her about his mate.
“You will always be mine.” Nope, didn’t like that. He leisurely pivoted his stare to face me once more, mimicking a predator circling its prey. I looked up into his sea-blue eyes and batted my eyelashes, distracting him. Before he had a chance to realize, I tilted my neck back and then head-butted him so hard that my own vision blurred.
“They are not just stories, and you are a fool to think so. The forest itself is said to come alive if it wishes! This willow…” I glanced up to the tallest branches. “Beautiful as it may be, could strangle us in our sleep with its vines if it decided to.” I could have sworn the wispy vines danced around my face in acknowledgement as I finished my sentence.
She snickered. “It’s adorable that you think I'm going to make this easy for you.”
“There’s no such thing as trolls, Solus!” she mocked at me. “What the fuck do you call that then, huh?”
“One, I’m the one who beat the troll. That thing would be picking us out of its teeth by now if I left you in charge. Two, I wasn’t pretending to be dead. My body aches from its lovely maneuver that sent me flying through the trees. And three…yes. Actually, I think this is hilarious. That’s the most fun I’ve had in months.” She continued giggling.
“You thought I was randomly going to attack you?” This was getting so old. “No, actually, I thought you were running from something else and we were about to have another troll situation on our hands.” Oh. “Nope! Not a troll!” I paused for dramatic effect, but I could tell he was just getting increasingly irritated.
