Callius. Now if anyone rubbed me the wrong way, it was my wife’s personal guard, who also ran our sea fleet. Something had always been off about him, but he was appointed by her father, and she had always seemed comfortable around him, so I never brought it up in discussion.
She said she wouldn't need a healer on site and that she could handle this all on her own—I was such a gods-damn fool. I had left not even thirty minutes ago. Not but a half hour and she was gone. She died alone and was probably terrified, and I had failed her. I had failed her as a lover, a partner…and, and a mate. My mate was gone.
As my hips rocked painfully side to side to the beat of my horse’s steps, I couldn’t help but think about the king. Over the last few months, my father’s health had been declining. Healers couldn't figure out what was wrong with him, and all he could describe was that his insides felt as if they were charred.
“We can talk in your chambers later,” I said to him in a hushed tone. “First, I must report to the queen.” "Ah, yes," he said, as he wrapped an arm around my shoulder, and his other around Avery's. "Let's go, my favorite, beautiful ladies. You too, sons."
“Have you spoken with Captain Adler?” he asked. I turned around to see his smirk had widened. I would love to smack it off of his face. “Not that it is any of your business, but I have not seen Kellan yet, no.” He was no longer smirking. It had turned into a full-on feral grin. “Have a nice day, Miss Solus,” he said as he tucked his arms behind his back and walked away.
He tried to hide his smile. “That she did…you know, a few months ago she started coming here to share a glass of wine at night. When it began, it was around once a week. Recently it’s been almost nightly. I would like to think that she is finally trying to put the past behind us.” “Interesting,” I whispered. That must’ve been why she was in here a few moments ago, but something about all of that didn’t sit right with me.
“Yes?” he asked, his voice nearly cracking with anticipation. “Will you stay here with me tonight?” He looked just as surprised as I felt about the invitation that came out of my mouth. “If you try anything, I will stick my dagger into your gut, but I would feel better knowing you're guarding my back.” The sorrow behind his eyes slowly faded. “I would be honored,” he responded, as he gently shut the door behind himself and made his way toward me.
“Oh yeah, there’s many of them, hidden right between the walls. I don’t even think the king and queen know of them all. Some lead straight to personal chambers, others to the library or the dungeons, and some even go beyond the castle gates. I spent much of my childhood exploring them.” I knew I was likely sharing too much with him, but at this point, my fate had been sealed with that damning kiss.
allowing my tongue to slip inside and explore. His scent of arousal enveloped me as he let out a rough moan of approval, and broke off the kiss, using his tongue to slip down the center of my throat and body until it found my exposed nipple.
Heres the thing. This is lazy writing. This author is execting you to understand what a fae is from other authors writing. There was barely any development of skills of the fae...she can smell emotions? When was that mentioned?
My dagger, the only thing I had left of my father, whose soul had left this realm and I never knew. My favorite weapon, my most treasured gift and reminder of who I truly was, gone. Destroyed out of spite in only a second of time.
“This next part will be our little secret. I need to tell you something else about your king, something Kellan wasn't even made aware of.” Kai's tone was venomous. “You see, Mother couldn’t have you in the king's ear any longer regarding ending the war. So she was forced to take matters into her own hands.” He couldn’t be suggesting what I thought he was… “Just three drops in his nightly wine. That’s all it took to bring down a king completely undetected.” “You lie!” I shouted, even though I knew within my soul that he spoke the truth. The queen had killed the king. My favorite person in the
