It made my exclusion harder to deny. The contrast meant that over time, my long-held hurt began to be replaced with something altogether more uncomfortable.

Being careful with her means I am the one uncomfortable. I’m the one in pain.

I was efficient, my customary resentment replaced by new-born purpose.
