“Keep walking,” Kaelis commands under his breath. I try, but my feet won’t move. My head is spinning. Kaelis’s biceps and forearm tense around my hand as if trying to anchor me, like he can sense my immediate need to bolt again. “I have you.” It’s almost reassuring, even from him.
“This is my future wife, the woman who will become your princess. Choose your next words carefully. I assure you that having your throat cut out is not a pleasant experience.” Kaelis acts so convincingly that it steals my breath when he drops my hand from the crook of his elbow and wraps his arm around me, pulling me close.
Rage is worth little if it’s not channeled.
I hope it is all to your liking. Now show me what my bride can do.
You think you appreciate what you have and then it’s taken from you…and you wonder if you ever treasured it enough.
“Come back to me.”
“I do hope she clings to me,” Kaelis says, eyes still on them even though he takes a step closer to me. His attention drops to my face with a look that threatens to devour me whole. “After all, she is my bride.”
“I have you,” he whispers, fingers slipping between my own. There’s something in his eyes that makes me feel…safe. “Just follow my lead, and I’ll make sure no harm comes to you tonight.”
There’s a clatter as one of the paintings falls. The easel topples over with it. My back hits the wall. Kaelis’s tongue is in my mouth. He kisses me like he’s been waiting years for this. My leg rises to wrap around his upper thigh, my skirt hiking up dangerously high. The prince bites my lower lip with a low growl. I can hardly breathe. He rolls his hips into me and I shudder. Fuck.
“A rumor can be more deadly than a poison.” Is he honestly trying to help me? I can’t make sense of it. “If they’re already talking, I might as well be a part of the conversation.” I shrug.
“Clara,” he starts slowly. “You cannot just barge in here and talk dirty to me.”
“You are insufferable. You are too talented for your own good. You are so—fuck—so arrogant at times and more stubborn than I have ever imagined a person capable of being. You are angry, fiery, passionate, often impulsive, and more determined than any creature I have ever met. And what’s worse is that—for as annoying as you are—you’re so gorgeous any sane man wouldn’t be able to take his eyes off you.” Kaelis approaches, but this time, every footstep has purpose.
“Every time I see you, I see what the world could be.”
The prince’s hands are all over me now, exploring every inch of my body as though I am a land to be conquered.
